something you can have a good dump to, or something you can lose yourself in whilst your in the bath.

not a girlie one that you would take on holiday - i cant read anymore of them

something with some light social or political satire maybe - something that makes me think ever so slightly without making me reach for the dictionary.
or
something insanely funny

not too long - i like a quick read

not a biography - preferably make believe - so no micheal moore - ive done him so to speak.

does this book exist..........?

What about The Best a Man Can Get by John O'Farrell? I reckon that fits your criteria. It's not girly (more lad lit) but is funny about parenthood and is an easy read. Yes, or High Fidelity by Nick Hornby or Things Can Only Get Better, also by John O'Farrell. It's subtitled "10 miserable years in the life of a labour supporter" and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

colette · 22/11/2003 09:30

I agree with www about "the best a man can get" My dh hadn't read a book in years and it was so good we had to take turns to read it. It is one of the best books I have ever read - it is hilarious (sp) and witty

3GirlsMum · 22/11/2003 09:47

Have you read any of the Ben Elton books...they are very good and very funny.

Tinker · 22/11/2003 10:19

'I don't know how she does it' by Alison Pearson is funny and sad. Also the Nicki (sp?) French ones are good thrillers - thought-provoking and a page turner - well, only read one but...

cazzybabs · 22/11/2003 10:19

White Teeth by Zadie Frost - read it while dd was tiny (within the 1st week) - couldn't put it down.

yes, Ben Elton is surprisingly easy to read.

Rather than the Discworld books though, I'd recommend Good Omens by Terry Pratchet and Neil somebody-or-other - it's hilarious, though possibly mildly offensive if you're religious (story line is that the anti-christ is born, but there's a mix-up at the hospital so he ends up being brought up by perfectly nice parents. there is an angel who runs a second hand bookshop and a demon who concentrates on mobile phones and the M25).

For political satire, try Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut.

forestfly · 22/11/2003 10:47

Nick Hornby is fantastic I love How to be good. |But i have just finished reading life of pie and that was great too. I can't stand girly books about meeting men, you know those ones with pictures of women on the cover, called names like, shes got to have him, born to be wild...

Jane101 · 22/11/2003 19:21

The Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich. Very funny.

hmb · 22/11/2003 19:43

Things Can Only Get Better, by John O'Farrell. Excellent, very funny, sharp satire on the days when Labour couldn't get elected, written by J O'F, a Labour supporter, very, very, very funny. It is a biog, but so good I don't think that you will mind.

anais · 22/11/2003 20:45

Another vote for Ben Elton, gridlock or this other eden (or something like that) are good.

anais · 22/11/2003 20:46

Oooh, or Inconceievable.

popsycal · 22/11/2003 20:58

life of pi - good with an interesting twist
hotel new hampshire by john irving - easy reading, entertaining but a bit too long for what you are looking for
one of my fave books tho
fever pitch and high fidelity and about a boy by nick hornby
a prayer for owen meany by john irving ...a little longer but REALLY keeps you hooked - one of my all time faves!

Hughsie · 22/11/2003 21:00

Harry potter is great but I was upset to see it on Room 101 where the very funny guest (cant remember her name) said that adults reading kiddy books were sad. I think it means I am hanging on to my youth - plus they are really well written

Hughsie · 22/11/2003 21:02

Just to show I am a grown up too - Marian Keyes books are good - Last chance Salloon and Lucy Sullivan got married. Agree about Ben Elton and the Billy Connolly (auto)biography is a good read too

fisil · 22/11/2003 21:03

Lynda (sp?) Smith, Hughsie. Funny, on Radio 4 a lot, can be v annoying though.

JJ · 22/11/2003 21:17

Carl Hiaasen or Christopher Brookmyre.. depending on whether you'd like a Florida conservationist or Scot writing your satire. Don't know if you're really religious, but if so, it might be best to avoid "Boiling a Frog" by Brookmyre.

Lucy123, Neil Gaiman. Have you ever read "A Night in the Lonesome October" by Zelazny? It's not so wicked, but very funny.

miggy · 22/11/2003 22:11

Just for variety, a strange book "the Count" by Helena Dela. A modern fairy tale, london book restorer grieving over death of husband marries european count as business deal. Goes to his remote castle (which of course is haunted) and..... sounds bizarre and is a bit but a really easy read but much more enjoyable than it sounds, got good reviews but largely disappeared due to its foul jacket. Shall make it my mission to spread the word as I would like her to write another!
Fingersmith by Sarah walters, not short but youll read it really quickly to find out what happens.

Linnet · 22/11/2003 22:21

I find Bill Bryson books hilarious, dh looks at me sitting laughing hysterically in the corner, rolls his eyes and turns the volume on the tv up.

suzywong · 22/11/2003 22:33

Heartliy agree with JJ and Miggy.
I needed something good and easy in lst week of pregnancy and found Kate Atkinson's latest collection of short stories ' not the end of the world' unputdownable. All the stories are modern fairy stories and are linked together.

Davros · 22/11/2003 22:44

Nick Hornby, Ben Elton, Bill Bryson (not usually fiction tho) and...... Stephen Fry.
Hated Kate Atkinson's Scenes Behind A museum or something like that..... turgid! Also didn't like the one Anita Brookner I read.
My BEST ever books are the Mapp & Lucia books by E F Benson, really excellent.

Kazziegirl · 23/11/2003 00:01

Sophie Kinsella - Can you Keep a Secret - funny easy read - am hoping to have some of her other books for xmas pressies.

3GirlsMum · 23/11/2003 08:24

Oh I love Sophie Kinsella books and have read a few of hers now. In fact I read so much I need to start swapping books rather buying them. Husband despairs at how many I can get through. Is anyone else such a prolific reader?
