Does anyone else ever have so much household rubbish that the lid of their wheelie bin doesn't close properly?

And if your bin lid isn't closed proerly, do you get a letter from your local council telling you that in future it won't be emptied, and if you leave the rubbish at the roadside the householder will face a fixed penalty notice of £50?
Just wondering, as my wheelie bin lid is never shut properly, i have two kids and am a full time childminder so have lots of rubbish./ I just thought i'd do a quick poll and see what other councils/local authoritys did.

Coppertop - I often walk to our local recycling centre with a bag of plastic bottles ( vlight!) and bottles

Our black bin is only emptied once a fortnight. I recycle paper, glass, cans, plastic bottles, food scraps and garden waste but the black bin still gets full to overflowing. After Christmas our neighbours put 3 bags of rubbish in our black bin because theirs was full. We knew it was them because there was an envelope with their address on, and had to ask them to take the bags out of our bind because there was still several days to go til collection day and we needed the space.

I had a look on the local council's website to see if they had any tips for reducing household waste. Their top tips were:

  1. Give the tubes from toilet rolls to a hamster.
  2. Use eggboxes for keeping earrings in.
  3. Use old shoelaces for playing conkers.

Gee thanks for those useful tips! [sarcasm]

Thanks to this thread, I recycled my first lot of plastic bottles and cardboard today.

Interesting link Jan.

Looks like I'm going to have be more proactive because the Council's making noises again re the amount going to landfill.

We live in Aberdeenshire council which in the past few months has had a changeover to a new system. New bins and collection only every 2nd week. They are standard size wheelie bins, ie about 4 ft high, so not very big for 2 weeks worth of rubbish. You have to have 6 people in the household to qualify for another bin. My joke is that I am not having another baby just to get another wheelie bin!
There has been a lot of outrage about the new system. We also got a recycling box but we have to take the stuff to recyling points - its not collected. It has forced me to recycle more which is good but even so I am struggling (there are 5 of us) and end up burning some stuff in our stove.
