this should explain a bit

biglips · 30/01/2006 22:26

is it due to lack of excercise?

mummytosteven · 30/01/2006 22:26

i don't think it's anything at all to do with lack of exercise. think it's like a trapped nerve but very very painful!

Mercy · 30/01/2006 22:30

Don't know, but I had it towards the end of my first pregnancy - it bloody hurt! Has your mum hurt herself recently, had a fall or something?

biglips · 30/01/2006 22:32

well she had pulled her muscle on her back (docs told her) but now her back is fine (she had it for a month) it had moved round to her front and she cannot left her leg up on the same side as the sciatica and cannot bend down properly - otherwise she is fine and she cannot feel the pain when pressing on it

it is a trapped nerve. very painful. how far down her leg is it travelling?

biglips · 30/01/2006 22:34

its not shooting down her leg at all as i know you can have sciatica at anywhere inside your body (as i had it toward the end of the pg and it was shooting down my leg till i rested for a whole day and it went but today i could feel it again)

i thought it was pain in the sciatic nerve which runs down your leg so I am a bit confused. where is the paiin? or is it only whne she tries to bend/lift her leg?

cyan · 30/01/2006 22:39

i suffer from sciatica and it can bloody kill, sometimes its just an ache on one side or at othertimes its a shooting pain for me, ive had it so bad that iwince every time i move.
Its an inflammation of the sciatic nerve which runs down both of your legs.

cece · 30/01/2006 22:43

me too, had it on several occasions. my right leg now has a permanent numbness to it, expecially the big toe on my foot. had to get rid of all my mule sandals as they keep falling off!

cyan · 30/01/2006 22:45

cece i cant wait thongs, both types!! the shoes bloody kill my feet, the worse thing you can do is clench your toes to keep them on which is what i always end up doing! the only sandals i wear are birkenstocks as they mould to my feet and im not straining the metatarsals in my feet.

biglips · 30/01/2006 22:48

ouch! poor women!!! i had it when i was heavily pg and i couldnt sit down (which was part of my job as i used to work in call centre) and my stomach used to do a somersault everytime i sat down! and walked like a bloody snail too!

god that would have been awful. i think might was brought on by the fact i did 3 bungee jumps in the space of 3 days. madness but i was a bit naive then!!!! since then ive had it every few months and it is awful. i remember once id have to sit down in a certain way, it was like some sort of routine otherwise id end up being in agony!

biglips · 30/01/2006 22:52

i had it today actually as ive done alot of walking in teh past 2 days and it was sort of coming on abit bue went once i relaxed for a bit

maybe mum havent got sciatica..!!

OP posts:
cece · 30/01/2006 22:53

biglips · 30/01/2006 22:54

Just got off bbc website

Causes
The sciatic nerve is the main nerve in the leg and the largest nerve in the body. It runs from the base of the spine, along the back of the thigh to the knee, where it divides into branches.

Sciatic pain is usually caused by compression of this nerve at the point where it leaves the spine. Damage to the nerve can also cause pain.

In young and early middle-aged adults, the most common cause of sciatica is a prolapsed disc. In older people, changes in the spine due to conditions such as osteoarthritis may be responsible.

Sometimes, sitting awkwardly can cause sciatica. Avoiding sitting in awkward positions for long periods of time. Taking regular exercise can help to reduce the risk.

Symptoms
Sciatica usually only affects one leg. The pain may be felt in the buttock, down the back of the leg, below the knee and in the foot. Such pain can be mild or severe; it may be persistent or come in spasms.

Sufferers may also experience numbness, tingling and muscle weakness in the affected leg. Sciatica can be worse when you cough or move, and is sometimes accompanied by low back pain.

Treatment
Sciatica sometimes resolves without treatment. However, if it doesn't you may be prescribed the following treatments:

painkillers
anti-inflammatory medication
physiotherapy, osteopathy or chiropractic
epidural injections.

yes it was my GP sent me to casualty, where I lay on a trolley for 6 hours. After a lot of prodding and a couple of x rays they sent me home. Really worried as they were muttering about operations

Luckily it seemed to repair itself apart from the numb leg so can't really grumble. It isn't painful just a nuisance!

Anyway hope your mum feels better soon. Best to keep active and try not to take pain killers as it masks the pain and can cause further damage. It will get better with time

biglips · 30/01/2006 22:58

thanks cece

are you ok now then?
