If you were going to buy something from Ebay and the seller accepts paypal but adds to their listing you have to pay an extra 4% to cover PP charges, what would you do?

I'm tempted just to bid on it anyway and if I win, not pay the extra 4%.

the auction is ending soon, do I place a bid or not?

sparklymieow · 29/01/2006 13:37

they are no allowed to change extra for the buyer to use paypal

sparklymieow · 29/01/2006 13:37

charge

kid · 29/01/2006 13:46

Well, I just won it and have paid without adding the 4% on, lets just wait and see what they say.

I am bidding on a breadmaker agin!!!!!!

get outbid at the last minute each time

satine · 29/01/2006 14:10

I really want a breadmaker and I thought there'd be loads after Christmas but they're not cheap. !!
But to answer the original question, I think it's a bit off to charge extra to cover Paypal fees.

jambuttie · 29/01/2006 14:25

satine totally agree with the cost of breadmakers

oh and I wouldnt pay the 4% either

charliecat · 29/01/2006 14:27

You not allowed to charge extra Ebay Rules.

jenkel · 29/01/2006 15:31

Pay by cheque, then nobody gets any paypal fees. Its easy to pay by paypal but it makes loads of money for ebay (who own paypal).

workingmumnhs · 29/01/2006 16:18

I'm not speaking to pay pal at the moment (childish strop) They tried to take the payment of £3.99 out of my acc and the bank refused the DD so they have took the money from my visa and cancelled my card off the paypal. Yes there was money in the account.

Why, why would they do this?

workingmumnhs · 29/01/2006 16:19

Now they want me to pay my selling fees (about £1.35) and I am refusing on principal. Told you it was a childish strop

kid · 29/01/2006 18:08

The seller sent me a refund. She said she stated she wanted an extra 4%

SoupDragon · 29/01/2006 18:29

Pay by cheque then.

bubblerock · 29/01/2006 18:30

She is not allowed to ask for extra for paypal!! Fight her on this one - she's in the wrong. Find ebays policy and threaten to contact ebay about this! I hate this and excessive postage charges

SoupDragon · 29/01/2006 18:31

Or direct them here

kid · 29/01/2006 18:38

I might just pay by cheque but it means I have to go and buy stamps!
I just wish they sellers would either add the extra cost they want in with the P+P or don't accept paypal as a payment option.

I have requested the total from her and added a note saying 'I didn't think you were allowed to charge extra for paypal?' I wonder what she is going to do?

Its not even much extra she is asking for, but its the principle!

jambuttie · 29/01/2006 21:13

have they accepted cheque payment hun?

kid · 29/01/2006 21:45

I worked it out and the extra 4% was cheaper than going to get the stamp and envelope, so I just paid it, (plus I reported them to Ebay )

The top I ordered for DD is really cute and worth the money, even with the extra 4%.

I just got this response from seller:

Hi there,

sorry about the paypal charges. Yes, you are allowed to charge for paypal. Lots of people do. Paypal actually charge 4% plus 20p for each paypal payment, so I actually lose money by accepting paypal payments. I do offer cheque payment as an alternative, but it often works out just the same for buyers to pay to use paypal as it does to pay for a stamp and envelope to send the cheque.

I don't see why she thinks you are allowed to charge for paypal.

I think they used to allow it, I seem to remmeber I used to end up paying a sur charge sometimes.

I do have a little sympathy with her TBH. DH sells stuff he makes on Ebay, and the fees doa dd up. if he puts it on the P&P he gets e-mailed / feedback threats (as in I will say this but never bothers) that postage costs £3.00, why £4 P&P? Even the jiffy bag cost gets complained about sometimes.

charliecat · 30/01/2006 20:42

you are not allowed, look at the example

Piffle · 30/01/2006 20:57

You are not allowed to, I am a seller and we were emailed lat year, most people whacked up p+p
but overall it has pushed the prices up a tad instead
Report her to ebay.
