is 'drugging' my dd2 to sleep acceptable?

HV was round yesterday. we've had problems with dd2 and sleep, and the GP has perscribed vallergan which has helped stop her screaming for 3hours each night. HV said 'oh so her sleeping isnt a problem then' but to my mind it is. i shouldnt have to sedate my dd2 each night. is it acceptable? GP said to use it for a short period only.

misdee - when are you seeing a paed? Ask for melatonin- if she is on the autistic spectrum it may be what she needs (and isn;t drugging). GP's can't prescribe it but consultants can (or you can buy it from the states and ship it in).

aha I should read the thread 1st!

Before I had DD I would have been at the thought of anyone drugging their child to sleep - then I had DD. I WISHED I had drugged her! It would have saved us 3 years of sheer hell. So no, needs must. Drugs are good!

blimey after reading this im gona get in touch with my ds paed and ask for something to get him to sleep, he wakes every hour from 8 to 7 in the morning, apparently kids with food intolerances are all like this but hes 15months old and ive never had 1 full nights sleep

misdee · 28/01/2006 20:57

btw, i have done controlled crying, putting her back to bed etc etc. she has just never slept. she used to wake every 2 hours for a feed when she was a baby, then when a bit older playtime started at 2am. she is 3.5yrs old now.

i used to give dd1 piriton when her eczema was bad, but it never made her sleep through like vallergen does to dd2.

i have tried everything with her controlled crying pick up put down walking the streets!! nothing works, when she does wake up i dont have to pick her up or anything just tell her im there and to lie down and go back to sleep and she will straight away but only if i go into her! she has asthma excema and is allergic to loads of stuff and is currently undergoing loads of tests to find out if its something medical that is causing this as she has a few other problems too the instructions on the bottle say 3 to 4 spoons in one dose think its meant for her sometimes wonder if im meant to take it!!

misdee · 28/01/2006 22:01

went through the whole allergy/eczema stuff as well with dd1. loads of people on eczema board use phenegan. the poor dears get so uncomfortable and wake up, and even when their skin is under control, they are still in the habit of waking.

I did phenegan, piriton, homeopathy and I did get perscribed melatonin by my GP but after DD was asleep she would retch as if she was going to vomit. As this was happening all night in her sleep I couldn't cope for the thought of choking so she is now on valergen and it is wondeful stuff.

getbakainyourjimjams · 29/01/2006 11:07

are you sure it was melatonin? gps aren't allowed to prescribe it.

getbakainyourjimjams · 29/01/2006 11:14

although having said that I did meet someone who said that melatonin made her son sick. I asked the consultant before giving it to ds1 and she said she it wasn't listed as a side effect. Wonder if its another potential one.

sansouci · 29/01/2006 16:01

Would you give a baby lemsip? Of course not! For an adult, it's ok. For a baby or child, it's not. Same goes for lots of OTC meds. Check with paed 1st, always, before you give even OTC meds.

My GP has given DD2 Valergen which is also not allowed to be given to under 2's but my dd is only 21 months and when she was on it last year she was only 16 months.

pillowtalk · 11/02/2007 02:48

my son has been on vallergan on and off for a few years now, you are not a bad mum for letting your child and yourself get the sleep your body needs to be able to function. Do not feel bad about it at all. I did to start with but it makes such a difference to them when they are a nicer person the next day

Good luck with it all
