Toilet lid up or down?

Because I move in circles of glamour, I recently learned that you should put the toilet lid down before flushing to stop bacteria swirling around in the air. But I have colleagues who don't like the lid down because they don't like to touch it.
Do you think about this/care?

With 3 males in the house (I have one in particular in mind) I like to find the seat and lid UP. It means he has lifted the seat to have a pee, often too lazy. Rotten aim at the best of times.
Why can't men sit down to pee anyway??? There would be a lot less fall-out.
