Facial Congestion in newborns.....................Mears or anyone know much about this?

When my DS was born 9 months ago, at the point when his head was being born the contraction went and he was stuck with just his eyes and nose out.

After he was born the mw pointed out that he was swollen and bruised around his mouth but that it was "facial congestion" and would disappear over the next 24 hours.

Well, obviously it disappeared mostly (after several days) but when he is upset or crying he still goes very blue around his mouth. Is this likely to be related to the facial congestion?

Is it even a real thing?

Mears?

FWIW, mine also went blue around the mouth if they got upset/cried or had colic, all part of holding their breath a bit and not quite taking in all the oxygen they should. Not sure if it's similar to your DS but AFAIK, it's not uncommon for it to happen with babies. HTH

i just googled it, and it IS a real ything. although i could only find reference to it in conjuntion with sinusitis or infant suffocation!

Hi VeniVidiVickiQV - facial congestion is very common in babies and usually resolves pretty quickly in 24-48 hours. Some babies have broken blood vessels in their eyes and that can take a bit longer to go away.

The blueness you describe round the mouth sounds typical of wind. Don't ask me the science behind it but babies often look blue round the mouth until they 'burp'. It isn't related to facial congestion you'll be glad to know. Just a normal baby feature

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/01/2006 21:49

Its the same pattern as the 'congestion'.

am ed at infant suffocation SL!

Thanks!

Is it common then for them to get "stuck" as the head is being born then?

the mw did seem concerned at the time that my contractions disappeared for nearly 2 minutes.

Sometimes contractions disappear as babies are on their way out and they can appear to get 'stuck'. The next contraction just gets it moving again. It isn't at all unusual.

I would say if you are concerned about this 'blueness', I would make an appointment for GP for a check over for reassurance that all ia well. HTH.

My DDs head was delivered and then my contractions stopped for 7 minutes (because had very fast and furious labour and was tired), at the time it seemd very surreal but MW unphased.

Just wanted to let you know the head thing happened to me too!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/01/2006 22:12

WCL - its the most bizarre feeling isnt it - something "stuck" down there that you cant shift

I had a water birthe and my dd's head came out with one contraction (under water!) and then I didn't have another contraction for about 2 minutes! By then I was panicking and asking the midwife whether the baby was going to drown! [smile. A very strange feeling to look down and see this head sticking out of you!

Littlefish · 23/01/2006 22:38

birth, not birthe obviously.

WestCountryLass · 23/01/2006 23:19

Really weird! And not sure if you had pain relief but I was going au naturelle but strangley had no pain even though I had delivered babys head and body was still inside ????

I think I was high on endorphins though as I asked the midwife whether the baby was a boy or a girl and when she said she couldn't tell yet, I said "what do you mean you can't tell, does baby look like a boy or a girl" no idea what I was thinking

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/01/2006 23:59

small shot of meptid - not particularly strong stuff, just like having taken a slug of gas and air.

I didnt find the pushing stage painful as such - more just bloody uncomfortable like you said. Most odd.

ds always used to get this blue tinge around his mouth and my lovely old lady next door used to say it was wind. he never gets it now (he's 16 months) though he also had facial congestion too...

dinny · 24/01/2006 00:02

ds's head was crowned for about 12 contractions as his shoulders got stuck. is a horrid feel, hey?
