boring garden design question

round the side of my house is a gap, on one side is the house (side of) on the other is a 6ft fence which borders on next door

the gap is the length of the house, is about 2ft at one end and 4-5ft at the other, and it gets no sun

its such a waste of a space but i dont know what to do with it

cant really think there is room for a shed, but it would be a great place to store bikes etc if i could think it through

any ideas?

thanks!

  • baton screwed to house wall with some kind of corrugated plastic / shed roofing felt roof thingy ?
  • have a chippy custom build a little shed ?

Do you have any ground floor windows overlooking this gap ? You could try short-trunked tree ferns planted in raised pots which will create enormous frond canopy / jungle feel ! Also bamboo may work.

yes i thought of a roof thingy

would we have to check with neighbours

i cant see why we would

what would be best for ground cover? its mud right now (and we are skint)

plastic then cover with woodchip

NP - I had a shed built to fit my gap - our was about 3ft all the way down but as long as the door is at the wide part should not be an issue.
Ours was about 400 quid for 3' x 12' so not cheap but very useful indeed. Garden tools & bikes in there now!
Not sure where you are but think the company was based in Leicester (I am in Notts) - found it by Googling 'custom built shed'

i would have to have the door to a shed at the narrow end, the wide end there is a fence. although i could remove the fence, it only separates our front and back gardens. sort of

i think maybe a shed in the future, just now i will investigate a sort of roof thingy, to cover bikes etc

i have seen half height sheds, like coal bunkers are they any good

also small narrow tall tool shed things, for tools (obv!)

maybe memrbane then gravel for security ? (Hear crunchy burglars).

You might need to ensure your roof thingy didn't deposit large quantities of water onto neighbour's wall IYSWIM !

nailpolish · 23/01/2006 15:42

there is a path that runs between the fence and neighbours house.

would i attach roof thingy to our house or fence?

Would probably go for house wall for solidity and ease. The other side could be free-standing IYSWIM (ie cantilevered from house), depending on strength needed / investment desired etc.

hub2dee · 23/01/2006 15:49

tbh, the standalone shed / structure thing might be a better way to go as you could then easily lock up stuff IYSWIM.

nailpolish · 23/01/2006 16:58

yes i thought about that, the locking issue, but we have a garage, so bikes will just continue to be kept in there, and the bit round the side would be where i kept non-expensive garden stuff and the plastic toys like slides, etc

thanks for all the tips x
