What do you do with old car seats?

My dt's are just about to graduate from their maxi cosi prioris to the rodi - what do I do with the old seats? Ebay, or is selling a used car seat a no-no? They haven't been in any accidents, but are well worn. Would charity shops take them? Am loathe to sling them in the tip. Am not planning on any more kids, plus the loft is full.

don't think charity shops will take them because they may have been damaged...
people are selling on ebay... or on here?

fairydust · 22/01/2006 22:36

people do sell / buy them off ebay so worth a try

starlover · 22/01/2006 22:36

actually... how much were you wanting?

mumoftreasures · 22/01/2006 22:39

Charity shops will also want the instructions with them, if they take them at all. Car boot is your best bet, I think, or give away to a pregnant first time mum

mumoftreasures · 22/01/2006 22:40

Why is it that car seats are not safe anymore if they have been in an accident? They are not exactly crash helmets are they?

misdee · 22/01/2006 22:46

the impact wil lweaken the frame of the car seat. we were in a slow moving crash, but replaced our seats.

suedonim · 22/01/2006 22:48

MoT, they may be unsafe after an accident because the shell could have invisible hairline cracks which would cause the seat to disintegrate in another crash. Also, the straps can stretch by as much as 9% in an accident which means they could then snap if put under stress again.

mumoftreasures · 22/01/2006 22:53

OK fair enough. I've not been in a crash ever, but will change the car seat if ever . Touch wood. Especially the snapping of the straps is quite scary. Does this happen to normal seat belts as well after a car crash? Do you need to change them too?

starlover · 22/01/2006 22:56

milge... where have you gone? i may be interested in one, depending on how much you want for them. and postage etc etc

MistressMary · 22/01/2006 22:56

Going in the tip.

Milge · 22/01/2006 23:00

I'm back! I don't want anything for them, you are welcome to have it/them for postage only, but they are "well used". Would be a bit embarrassed to ask for money for it/them. Were new in 2003,Harry fabirc. and am not sure how much seat security has come on since then. Wasn't looking to get rid of them via MN, just curious!

hmm do you know if you can buy fresh covers for the,m?

starlover · 22/01/2006 23:02

i only really need one as a second seat in my parents car... they hardly ever have him, but it'd be easier than switching our seat each time!

MrsSpoon · 22/01/2006 23:03

You could make arty pictures or sculptures out of them and become hugely famous and make a fortune?

misdee · 22/01/2006 23:03

check ebay for spare seat covers. i considered selling my old seat cover the the club class we had, after i ditched it after the crash.

Milge · 22/01/2006 23:06

I need to wait for my Rodis to come from JL. The seat covers are washed regularly, they are faded and the polystrene bit on the headrest has snapped off the main seat body. Hence why I don;t want any money!
Send me a CAT( if you've paid!), my email address contains my name, so i'm not prepared to spell it on the thread.

starlover · 22/01/2006 23:07

yeah i just looked on ebay but couldn't see any

starlover · 22/01/2006 23:09

ooh is polystyrene bit important?

Milge · 22/01/2006 23:10

Dunno - the head rest bit is still there, just not attached to the rest of the polystyrene in the main seat. Its happened to another friends Priori, over enthusiastic leaning in to strap the kids in( or big boobs?!)

starlover · 22/01/2006 23:11

hmm i might pass then! just in case... sorry!

suedonim · 23/01/2006 03:12

MoT, yes, I think car seat belts also need to be changed if you've had an accident.

nightowl · 23/01/2006 03:28

starlover, what age seat are you wanting? i have two. the second one is fine and would still fit dd but it wasnt compatible with the new car. its sitting in my bedroom doing nothing apart from tripping me over at the mo. its a mothercare one, black in colour, from 20lb upwards. im not sure how much postage would be but i dont want anything else for it. ive still got the instructions too.

nightowl · 23/01/2006 03:30

btw, it was only used for about 6 months and the only damage is that the cover has a couple of pulls where dd got her shoe buckles caught on it!

Hulababy · 23/01/2006 08:28

I sold my first stage one to a friend of an online friend.

My second stage one I have sold to a friend this weekend. It's an isofix one and costs £190 brand new, so was loathe to just dump it. Friend's know we will have looked after it and wouldn't sell them something that had been in a bumpop or anything. TBH they saw DD in it this weekend so know we wouldn't risk her in it, let alone their child.
