Any other synaesthete mums out there?

just curious, because apparently women are statistically much more likely to be synaesthetes.

I am but much less as I've got older. It's of very little practical use, but every book I read has (well used to have) a colour, days of the week, numbers etc.

I also have a colour sense about different keys in music which is occasionally useful when I'm playing, but I'm not massively musical so it's not a big gift.

Funny, mine has got stronger as I get older. I only have colour/grapheme, but have a feeling at least one of the kids might have the musical form that you have.

I am a bit, but only in that different notes have different colours. Was useful for music exams as a child and I can pitch notes perfectly with no external cues, but that's of very limited application in my day to day life Grin

Well the latest science says our brains actually process information differently to non-mutants ( as DH would have it), so you're very special in case you didn't know it already.

pushmepullyou Envy I wonder if it is possible to heighten synaesthesia? If mine were stronger it would be more useful in music. I have just started making sure I use the right colour pen for the key if I'm noting things down on my music (bit of a pain for C though as that's yellow and it doesn't show up) but it's not really possible to reproduce what I see in my mind as it's more of a background lighting effect than anything else and it's very vague and intangible.

I was - digits and smells had colours, but it has faded. Sad

It never got in the way, though I couldn't understand why people couldn't understand my descriptions.

The only benefit I got from it (apart from pleasure) was that I'm a very visual learner and I could easily memorise anything numbered from 1-10. Even quite complex diagrams, as long as I could place my coloured numbers at crucial points.

I've taken part in a neuroscience study about it which has been interesting but I agree it hasn't been overly useful, and I spent years being punished at school for taking numbers down wrong. I still get 2s and 3s mixed up, and 7s and 4s. Fortunately I found a job where I can delegate anything involving numbers!
