Looks like a good place geographically for us to move to: what is it like to live there?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

i have a mate who moved there a couple of years back and she loves it, but i have not been there.

scatterbrain · 21/01/2006 22:23

There's Digger-land there !!! Nice place I think - know Tiverton well - one junction further along M5 - but only been to Cullompton twice - both times to Diggerland !

Devon is great though - cheap and lovely !

bonkerz · 21/01/2006 22:26

Lived in Tiverton for 5 years and worked in Cullompton for 2 of those. A lovely place to live as long as you can drive as buses and public transport no the best! Easy access to coast and friendly people!

cece · 21/01/2006 22:31

oh good I was hoping people would say that!

Ah - Diggerland - thats why the name rang a bell ! I've seen it on N COrnwall & Devon maps !
(not been there though !)

Cullompton is a fairly small town but does have a cricket team, but as bonkerz said I would think it is a better place to live if you can drive, close to South and North coasts,Exmoor and Dartmoor, easy access to Exeter,Taunton, even Bristol as its right next to the M5, which put me off living there because of the constant hum from the motorway traffic.

cece · 23/01/2006 18:09

I was wondering about noise from the M5. Is it really bad or is it just on the side of the town nearest the motorway or it it all over?

I'm not sure, but when dh and I were looking for our first house, we considered Cullompton and from all the gardens we stood in we could hear the traffic, but we come from very rural areas, so maybe it was just more apparent to us.

cece · 24/01/2006 14:27

Ummm I wonder if I will. I'm used to living on Heathrow flight path....

If not cullompton, have you any suggestions of where else?

Yes I know it and have good friends there. It IS a small place to be sure, but I've never heard anything bad about it. Indeed, it would make aore sense logistically for the friends to move down to Somerset but they like it there.

As alternatives, I would suggest Axminster or Charmouth (I adore Charmouth). If you don't need to be quite in the county, Ilminster is also very nice, and Martock (both places Dh would like to go when I graduate, as family there).

PeachyClair · 24/01/2006 15:03

Another good place- that I have my eventual eye on- South Petherton.

but cullompton is fine.

Bibiboo · 24/01/2006 16:03

my bezzie mate lives there and loves it - moved back after Uni and the times I've visited her it seems a lovely, quiet, rural place to live. Small town but not too far to Exeter. I shall ask her for a more accurate account and post here tomorrow for you ...

i would recommend totnes in devon.between exeter and plymouth. we moved near there 3 years ago and wouldn't live anywhere else. very cosmopolitan. voted one of the top ten funkiest places in the world! near the moor and the sea. very child friendly. lots of organic farms and dartington hall brings lots of creative people to the area. lots of art and music festivals. big alternative education movement - steiner, montessori, reggio approach aswell as home education groups. buddhist college and retreat centre, Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmunson, Jennifer Saunders and Damon Albarn all live near by.
housing is expensive though.
if interested visit on a friday or saturday when its market day. its a lovely day out though get there early to get a parking space.
have fun looking

cece · 24/01/2006 20:29

Will check some of these places out on right move. Thanks for the suggestions.

I have found a nice house in Willand and another in Uffculme - does anyone know about these places?

My bezzie mate says the following
"I think that Cullompton (or Cully as its known to us
locals) is quite a nice place to live but I am probably
biased as I grew up there and still live there! There are
some dodgy areas (St Andrew's estate and Haymans Close I
think) but on the whole its alright. There are quite a few
new housing developments being built in Cullompton and
nearby Willand, so there are some nice shiny new houses on
the outskirts of town.

Its not great for shopping, we've got a large Somerfield
and a new Tesco is being planned for the outskirts of town.
There aren't any High Street shops, but we do have a post
office, about 3 banks, newsagents, chemists, a shoe shop
(yay!), estate agents and about 6 hairdressers (!), so you
can get the basics in town. There is a farmer's market
every Saturday too. For High Street shopping, Exeter and
Taunton are only about 20/30 minutes away by car and there
is a good bus service. The nearest train station is about
10 minutes out of town, but Cullompton is right on the
motorway which is handy. There are two dentists and two
doctor's surgeries but I think that the doctors are merging
and moving to a site on the outskirts of town which is a
bit of a pain, but there will be a bus service and plenty
of parking apparently.

There are two primary schools and a secondary school (and
another good secondary school in nearby Uffculme) and
although I haven't had need of them yet - there are about 2
nurseries that I know of.

The nightlife isn't up to much - there are a couple of pubs
in town (which aren't very special) but the nearest cinemas
are in Tiverton, Exeter or Taunton. We do have about 3
Chinese restuarants/takeaways, 2 fish and chip shops (one
is excellent - Ian's Fish Bar) and an Indian
restuarant/takeaway. If you're into sport - there is a
leisure centre and a golf club but the nearest swimming
pool is in Tiverton.

On the whole, Cullompton is a friendly town, with lots of
young and old families. Its kind of a commuter town really
I suppose, so not really the life and soul of the party but
not quite as sleepy as people think it is!

I hope this helps : )"
