running...well, jogging, I mean

Just been for a 30-min run/jog in the countryside around our new village and it was FAB. Really (amazingly) enjoyed it and feel very motivated to go lots now.

two questions for any runners - if you run at a moderate pace for 30 mins, how far have you gone...?

and...how often should I go for speedy weightloss?!

Congratulations on getting out - that's the hardest first step.

Depending on how young/fit/old/decrepit you are, you probably did +/- 3 miles, ie c.10 minutes a mile.

Have a look at the Running thread - there's a lot of good advice there, particularly from Gizmo, with links to the Runners World website which should give you some ideas on running prgrammes to meet your needs.

In terms of increasing your metabolism, I have read that bursts of sprinting (ie ruuning fast for a few minutes, with a few minutes of slower "recovery" running in between times) is the best way to do it. It's also good for increasing your base running spead.

The fact that it hurts is why I don't do it that often - too much like hard work (says I, who hasn't been able to run since September, when I knackered my achilles tendon)

Hi Dinny! I still haven't worked out where you are, although I know it's near me...

Get a pedometer - it's great to measure approximate distances, and if you're serious about doing it regularly, then a heart rate monitor is also a good way of checking if you're keeping within an appropriate 'training zone' for cardio/ weightloss benefits.

When I was training for the Great North Run a couple of years agao I did loads of running around here, but sadly have got out of the habit now . Let me know if you fancy a jogging partner??!

If you are a new runner I think it's best to run only alternate days to start with. That way you have a chance to notice any aches and pains that shouldn't be there before you go running again.

No - don't run every day - have at least a day in between to start with to give you body (shins!) time to repair and recover...

yay, just did a 4 k run with a friend (took 45 minutes) - feel v pleased with self...knackered though!

well done Dinny. You've picked a good time to start as the weather is supposed to be very bright for the next week or so whcih willmake it even more enjoyable for you.
Maybe try and make time tomorrow for a decent walk as it will help to relieve any stiffness you might get from today.

it's gorgeous, McKenzie. think will give self a rest tomorrow and go again on Tuesday (though it will have to be in the dark, after kids in bed) Unless I push ds in 3-wheeler...is it poss to run properly and do that? btw it's a fixed-wheel buggy, not specifically a jogger.

Hi Dinny

You haven't joined the health club 'on the way' to the town beginning with 'R' have you? Reason I ask, is because they have a running club for all levels.

(If you ARE interested in joining, they have a £20 joining fee offer at the moment).

Would love to meet up at the 'farm' but only problem is I work, so it would have to be weekends or perhaps a Fri afternoon, once it gets a bit lighter?

How old are your children? I have 2 DSs - 6 & 3.

No, haven't joined any club, MO2. Am running with running-club people at work mostly, a bit on my own here.
Sat always actually pretty good for us as dh works. Or Friday pm after 3 (so when it's lighter). I have dd, 3.5 and ds, 16 months.

hi dinny, if it's not specifically a jogger it might not be fair on DS as the suspension wont be designed for going at that speed. Worth a try perhaps if you could find a nice flat path without any bumps and kerbs, we have one round the outside of our local park for instance.
