Just HOW painful is a tattoo?

I am seriously considering having a small tattoo on the back of my shoulder, say a butterfly or flower or something. But just how painful are they? My SIL had rather a large one done across the small of her back and said it wasn't too bad, but she could just be saying that to tempt me into doing it. Anyone here had one done?

I have a daisy chain on the bottom of by spine , it really hurt A LOT !!! I don't think I have a low pain threshold either, but it may have been the spot where I had it?
Also I'm allergic to the numbing stuff they use so had weepy blisters for weeks. The tattoo is great and I don't regret it, but it was painful!!

depends on where you have it done. i have 7. the worst pain-wise was the one of the back of my neck. the least-painful, is on my left forearm...

Shoulder, fine more stinging and sore than lots of pain.

i have one on my abdomen and it only felt a little scratchy but dont get one unless you are 100% sure you really want it and choose your design carefully.

Feels like a constant cat scratching while it's being done. After it feels like sunburn.
