Piano lessons - how much?

Just wondering, as dd1 currently has a 3/4hr lesson which costs £12 - the teacher comes to our house.

Is this cheap?(Feel it might be - but teacher was only just starting when she took dd on). The teacher said tonight that she wants dd1 to increase from 3/4hr to 1hr. I asked how much that would be and she said was charging £20 an hour to new pupils, but as we had been with her a while would probably charge less than this.

Not sure what we should be paying but would be interested to know what everyone else pays.

TIA

Well my gran used to pay £11.20 (£5.60 for half) an hour for my lessons about 15 years ago at the teacher's house so £12 does sound cheap.

We pay £10 for 1/2 hour at teachers house

That is very cheap indeed. My dad was charging £11 for half an hour about 10 years ago- and that is in the middle of Hull where the market isn't that great. hang on to her!!

Kittypickle · 20/01/2006 20:39

£8 for half an hour at teacher's house Dorset.

£20 per hour for lessons at your house is good imo. I was paying a tenner for a half hour at her house.

My query would be why does she want her to have 1 hr lessons? Most people struggle to concentrate fully for more than half an hour at a time. How old is she? And what sort of level is she playing at?

Caligula · 20/01/2006 20:55

My DS started off with just 15 minutes and then moved up to 30.

Agree with Roisin, an hour does sound very long, for any lesson, let alone piano.

BonyM · 20/01/2006 21:12

She started off with half an hour and then moved up to 3/4hr - she is very keen and plays any chance she gets. She will be 8 in April. Her teacher thinks she is working towards doing grade 1 fairly soon, hence why she feels an hour lesson might be useful.

They have a lot of fun actually, so concentration is not a problem - towards the end of lessons, they often have a bit of a "jamming" session!

It's far cry from the lessons I used to have - dd's teacher is early twenties and a bit of a hippy - dd thinks she's great.

Good to know that she's cheap as well!

20 to come to you for an hour is very reasonable. I would pay her that - but then I would say that as I'm a piano teacher.

nooka · 20/01/2006 22:12

Can I but in? We would like to start piano lessons for dd (5) but have no idea where to look for a teacher. Any ideas? We are in SE London

Ds2 gave up recently but his were £12 a half-hour at teacher's house (in Lancs).

V good teacher.

To find a teacher:

Associate Board of the Royal Schools of Music website.

Incorporated Society of Musicians

Local Music Shop

Ask at School

nooka · 21/01/2006 22:55

Thanks bobbybobbobbingalong! We'd thought of the last two, but never heard of the first ones. Will check them out. (Hijack over!)

tortoiseshell · 21/01/2006 23:03

I charge £22 an hour. I would be VERY surprised if your dd actually needed an hour tbh - at the school I teach at we recommend they go up to an hour lesson for Grade 7-8.

Glad she's enjoying it so much though!

tortoiseshell · 21/01/2006 23:04

nooka - nothing is better than a personal recommendation - do any of dds contemporaries have lessons?

nooka · 22/01/2006 00:02

tortoiseshell, I agree, but unfortunately not, probably because she's only just old enough to be thinking about it, and we don't know many local familes with older children (mostly they have babies!)

We pay £6 for a half hour lesson at the teachers house and she's very good. DD is 5. I found the teacher by asking mums at the school. I also tried a local music shop but it was the mums who sorted it out for me.
