Most people on my street object to planning notice for a new takeaway......

but I'm not really fussed. I've had a letter through my door today asking me to write and object.

Someone wants to turn a currently empty shop unit into a chinese takeaway. We already have a chipy, post office, newsagents and Jacksons on this parade. Just round the corner from my street.

Should I be objecting? Am I missing something?

Our Chinese has just closed down It was part of a health club complex so no surprise really!

Nbg · 20/01/2006 16:27

Are they mad?

Why on earth would you object to having a local chinese takeaway?

bran · 20/01/2006 16:27

Maybe the people asking you to object live very close by and will be affected by the smells. Also your front garden will probably have more litter, when we lived in Balham, close to the main street we always had to do a clear up after Friday and Saturday nights.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 20/01/2006 16:28

I wouldn't be fussed either - especially as you already have a chippy a newsagents and Jacksons (what's that??) near you. It's not like there's nothing near so you'd be bringing a whole new group in.

What's the betting if it's turned down, and the empty shop stays empty all the residents will be complaining about boarded up shops bringing the area down and the graffiti and vandalism that generally occurs with such empty places LOL.

waterfalls · 20/01/2006 16:28

Not if you dont want to, if it does home deliveries, that will cut down the amount of customers anyway, as I imagine people are worried about rif-raf hanging around.

Seashells · 20/01/2006 16:28

People tend to object to anything new IME.
I can't see what would be so bad about it. Perhaps more traffic? The after pub surge to get a chinese? The smell?
Have they said why they are all objecting?

compo · 20/01/2006 16:29

Jacksons is an up North supermarket. Bit like Kwiksave or Spar

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 20/01/2006 16:29

but bran - surely there's not going to be that much extra litter given they alreayd have 2 shops (just looked up Jacksons LOL) that sell alcohol and a chippy (which in my experience creates a lot more 'dumpable' rubbish - and smells) close by?

northerner · 20/01/2006 16:31

Hmmm, yes, litter. This is already a problem with the high school kids buying sweets and crisps on the walk to school. By the time they get to our house they've finished and drop the wrappers which end up in my garden.

It's not near enough though for smell to bother us. Some people might be worried about people hanging around late at night as the Chippy is just a tea time one and closes at 8pm.

people love objecting to these things - it's because they don't have to do it face to face, they can write a letter, post it and be done with it!

We live behind a high street so have an italian, thai and chinese right in front of us - must say, the smell from the Italian place is divine.

Lots of people think takeaways will draw people into the area late at night and bring rubbish, crime, drunks, noise etc.

bran · 20/01/2006 16:35

It's a great pity you can't sample the food before you decide whether to object or not. Good chinese food would probably be worth any smell or litter, but bad chinese food horrible and the smell of stale oil will make you want to retch.

northerner · 20/01/2006 16:37

Will talk to dh tonight, see what he thinks. Have looked on planning website and it is a genuine Chinese man who already has a takeway on the other side of town and the food is devine!

I think it largely depends on how the business is run, but of course that won't be known until it is there. My main concern would be that if it is run badly that it may attract vermin, the four legged as well as the hooded, teenage variety. And if the extraction is bad there may be a bad smell.

It is all very well to say that having a Chinese takeaway near you is great as long as it is a clean and well run establishment. If it isn't it could well impinge on your quality of life. I'm not saying you should object but I do think you should try to appreciate the opinions of those who feel more strongly about it.

Carmenere · 20/01/2006 16:41

Definitely you should go and have a good look at how he keeps his premises. If it is well run it could be a great asset to your neighbourhood.

WigWamBam · 20/01/2006 16:41

I can sort of understand why some people might object - the flats where I used to live had a McDonalds built right next to them, within a few feet of the building, and the smell of rancid fat was horrible - in the summer we couldn't open the windows because otherwise even our hair would stink of it. There was a lot of noise - delivery drivers reversing in with their "Caution - this vehicle is reversing" at full blast at 5am, late night customers having rows in the car park, litter in the gardens and along our service road ... it wasn't very pleasant.

I know that a Chinese is a different kettle of fish but the cooking smells are still quite strong, there may be a problem with litter from takeaway containers, and they do tend to be open late at night so there may be a concern about late night noise.

bran · 20/01/2006 16:42

You could always put notes through doors asking your neighbours not to object if the food is good.

I see your point HRHQofQN, but I suspect that the chipy trade will probably stay at the same level so the chinese will be extra trade, therefore more opportunity for people to litter. On the other hand chinese food is generally not that easy to eat on the move (except for things like spring rolls) so hopefully most people will bring it home with them to eat.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 20/01/2006 16:44

we've got a chinese, a chippy and two latenight offlicences (closing at 11pm), and a sandwich bar - only open in the day though, down the road from us (literally - bottom of the street). The chippy makes by FAR the most rubbish, always finding empty chip packets up the street - but as yet I've never seen ANY rubbish from the chinese (you watch I'll come back from work tomorrow and find it piled up in our front 'garden' LOL).

mythumbelinas · 20/01/2006 16:47

why object when it's said that his food is 'devine'? Since moving i haven't found a great chinese t/a to the one i moved from
