Help! Dhs car has broken down, we cant afford to fix it and he works 60 miles away!

We just took DS1 to nursery and on the way back dhs car broke down. We called the AA but the man couldnt fix it, so he has called a tow truck to take it to a garage. Me and ds2 got the bus home but DH is still waiting for the truck.

Even when it gets to the garage, it seems pointless, the AA man thinks it is a big job (it went clunk and then the back of the car dropped and the wheels are squished and wont move) we have no money whatsoever and cant afford to have it fixed.

Dh is at work tomorrow, he has to be there at 6am, he works 60 miles away and it is impossible to get to by train. And we have no money for train fares anyway!!

We are totally broke, what on earth are we going to do????

phone employer and explain
is there another workmate who lives nearby who can pick him up

Fimbo · 16/01/2006 13:44

Could you borrow money from someone to get it fixed? Borrow a relative's car in the meantime?

Do his parents have a car he could borrow.

mumfor1sttime · 16/01/2006 13:46

Dh says it sounds like the suspension.

Can you borrow a car, hitch a lift, or phone employer and tell them. It cant be helped, surely they know the distance your dh has to go to work.

Could he use any holiday or lieu days?

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 16/01/2006 13:49

Unfortunatly his friends at work live quite far away, we thought about asking his mom to drop him off but i dont think she would be too happy about having to leave the house at 4.50am!

His work are a PITA when he had to have time off because his son was in hospital they docked his pay so I doubt they will be understanding about this! Although they wont have much choice really - if he cant get there then theres nothing he can do about it!

DH is worried about paying to get the car fixed, Im sitting here looking at a letter from a collection agancy through BT and various other bills and I dont know how the hell we are going to cope with this on top!

Maube i could get a credit card from the bank? How long would that take or is it a bad idea???

[panic emotion]

He has borrowed my moms car before but she will be working and using it. Dhs parents just got rid of there second car and share the one they have got so it is always in use.

My mom cant afford to help us out but maybe dh's parents can, Its so hard having to ask for money though!

Is the suspension a big job? Any ideas about how much it could cost?

Has he got full comp insurance if so,your usuallye covered third party to drive his mums car. That is if she didn't need it.

mumfor1sttime · 16/01/2006 13:56

My dh says it could be the suspension or the rear sub frame has come off its mounts. Cant tell without seeing car, love the description though!

Dh was re- building his car, so knows some things!
He has now sold his beloved car due to ds...

carlk · 16/01/2006 13:58

credit card from the bank not a good idea IMNHO
can you afford the parts or spares from a breakers?
If so i could probably help with fixing it.
get a new one, heaps are available for about £100,

heavenis · 16/01/2006 13:59

If you can borrow the money off them it would be better than trying to get a credit card or loan.

mumfor1sttime · 16/01/2006 14:00

Have just sold my 1987 fiesta for £100! There are several cars on auto trader website for under £500, could get one as a temporary measure.

carlk · 16/01/2006 14:12

tamba you have voicemail!

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 16/01/2006 15:02

DH just texted to say the car was at the garage, hes picking ds1 up and then coming home so will be able to find out whats wrong with it then!
