People who have moved to the country from London

What exactly is so much cheaper about living in the country to justify the massive salary cut you have to take when you move?

Food, clothes, schools etc the same price surely. Plus masses of petrol so that is more. If you are moving to an area where the house prices are not dissimilar to London, I can't see where you make the saving.

(and it goes without saying that no one works past 5.30!)

notasheep · 13/01/2006 20:09

Living in the country costs a fortune-I have been spending £40 per week to drive 16miles to get to the nearest supermarket.

It was a dream and i have done it but now i can walk the school run.

Where we lived living in the country was poverty and deprivation for some people.

Its quite different in the South East

foxinsocks · 13/01/2006 20:09

I guess you would get more garden for your money though and a parking space

i always laugh at londoners sayign how dulla dn white "thecountry" ( for that read anywhere that isnt london) is
even when i live d in birmingham - yes it was very multi cultural but all excpet abotu three of my frinds were.....white

morningpaper · 13/01/2006 20:17

but it's culture innit

white farmer culture is not very interesting

more diversity makes more a more interesting and tolerant environment imo

morningpaper · 13/01/2006 20:17

also no one is gay in the country

pottytrainingcod · 13/01/2006 20:18

hmm thinkt hat is crap ( in a lovely way mp)

Lonelymum · 13/01/2006 20:18

SM, I don't know quite what upset a your mother so much about Winchester, but I thoroughly enjoyed my childhood there and would go back like a shot if I could afford it. (also liked Richmond many years ago when I once went shopping there!) I think Winchester has a lot to offer young families, but if it is not your cup of tea, it is best avoided. I wish others felt the same and all the affluent Londoners looking for a bit of country living would go back to the big smoke, thus making the Winchester of my childhood an afforable option once again!

pottytrainingcod · 13/01/2006 20:18

and the gay " cluture is so fascinating"??
not all weekend trips a round ikea?

Lonelymum · 13/01/2006 20:19

Sorry MP? The people are boring and white? What sort of racism is that?

pottytrainingcod · 13/01/2006 20:19

tell me how being in a multi cultural area affects you daily

morningpaper · 13/01/2006 20:19

pottytrainingcod · 13/01/2006 20:19

pottytrainingcod · 13/01/2006 20:20

"I love buying fresh samosas" or getting curry goat on a saturaday?/
whyw hwywyhwh

morningpaper · 13/01/2006 20:21

WELL all the gay men will marry your daughters which is not very satisfying.

I regularly hear people talking about 'pakis' and 'wogs' and 'homos' and no one questions it - even children. Racism is rife because people are ignorant of what they don't know.

And there is no where to buy a Guardian.

And everyone dresses like it's 1984.

morningpaper · 13/01/2006 20:22

You wouldn't be allowed to love me in the country

They would call you a lezza

harpsichordcarrier · 13/01/2006 20:22

MP I live in the country (ish well not in a city anyway) (a rural area lets say) and I can't MOVE for gay man.

pottytrainingcod · 13/01/2006 20:22

NotQuiteCockney · 13/01/2006 20:24

Well, as a foreigner, albeit a white one, I feel happier living in a multicultural area. If I lived somewhere more rural, I would be "that Canadian".

And I do like getting good curry/dim sum/etc etc.

morningpaper · 13/01/2006 20:24

totally disagree

I think that London is very tolerant.

The race riots were over 20 years ago - things have changed a LOT. Look at other countries and the racial tensions going on there e.g. France - Britain is admired for its cultural diversity and acceptance of other cultures.
