well my manager actually.

Last Wednesday got to work and discovered that I was starting college this week (today) - Royal Mail had taken since the 19th December to deliver the letter. This meant I had to find someone else to play for a funeral at church today - at 12 (so 10 minutes time).

Got up early this morning (7.15) and left the house at 8 to catch the bus to Northampton. Arrived just in time for the 9.15 start. Started filling in the form and in the course of discussion with another colleague and the course tutor discovered

  1. The letter which the manager had written to say that work are happy to pay for my fees didn't include my name

  2. You have to have been working in care for 6 months, and have completed you induction training to be able to start your NVQ2

  3. The Manager knows that this is the case - as she's been told by the course tutor (who comes out occasionaly to the home as some of the others are doing their NVQ3).

So not only did I get up early for nothing,I wasted £3.80 on bus fares - and missed out on an extra £50 for playing for the funeral. Not to mention the time I took writing a short essay about myself and my workplace and filling in the enrolment form at home

So does this mean you can't do the course at all HRH?

Blu · 11/01/2006 12:34

GRRRRRRRRRR on your behalf!
especially the £50, that's very hard.
presume the other stuff can besorted with another £3-80 and a wait?

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/01/2006 12:44

I can still do it bugsy - but have to wait until September - as March (when the next lot will start) still won't be 6 months after me starting care work.

Just really infuriating - could really have done with that £50 - and was really looking forward to starting my NVQ

I want to write a letter to the manager voicing my annoyance - but haven't got a clue what to say - obviously don't want to make a thing of the £50 I missed out on, but do want to point out the inconvinience caused to me AND to DH (the buses during college hours are cr*p - so I had to call him to pick me up) - and it's 10 miles away - and it meant he had to get DS1 in the carseat and everthing.

Personally, I would let it pass ,and just make a joke of it more than anything and when she tells you about the next course ask her jokingly (but not IYKWIM) are you sure, totally sure, would you like to

a) Ask the audience

b) Phone a friend

c) Go 50/50

I am sure she will get the message.......

All done in jest, but leaving her in no doubt as to the fact that you consider her to be flaky re arrangements.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/01/2006 14:00

Thing is the next course won't be until September - and DH has had to re-arrange his hours to stay at home with DS2, I've paid out money I couldn't really afford for bus fares, and wasted the whole morning travelling too and from Northampton - not to mention the fact that as I only found out last Wednesday night I was "supposed" to be going today - it meant the Vicar only had from Friday (Thursday is her day off so couldn't phone her then) to rearrange another organist - not an easy task in this town - it took her 3hrs on Friday afternoon finding someone (and apparently he's not very good either just willing to "help") so she's been messed around with that (and as well as having had 2 regular church members die over the the last 2/3 weeks, and another seriously ill in hospital, her own parents aren't very ill too.

I would have been paid £50 for that funeral - instead it's cost me about £10 (bus fares and petrol) for absolutely nothing.

Well I accept that your are cheesed off and you were inconvenienced, but you have to balance that against the fact that you like your job and the hours suit, and the money helps.

I am sure she did not do it maliciously.

edam · 11/01/2006 14:04

I would certainly bring it up with your boss in a polite but firm manner. I'd be furious!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/01/2006 14:08

well I'm not going to say anything to risk my job And the tutor (who knows my manager quite well) said to me there and then "you have to have been doing care for at least 6 months and XXXX knows that as we've spoken about it before".

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/01/2006 14:09

oh and even if I went in like a bull in a China shop I doubt I'd lose my job - despite the fact that they've taken on 6 new night staff since I started (3 at the same time as me and 2 others afterwards, and myself) I'm the only one that's stayed .

Even the Night Supervisor when giving me some feedback the other morning was really careful telling me what I needed to improve on as "she didn't want me to leave too" LOL.

Definitely mention it QofQ - it's not on, especially as it has had a knock on effect on lots of other people.

Tortington · 11/01/2006 14:25

i think its your repsonsability to find out the details. that thisis a learning experience and you will ask questions next time.

this is the policy where i work. training is offered and we have an intranet where you can look courses up. we can also read compnay policy on paying for other courses outside and how much our annual allowence is.

the firm "ethos" of the company is that the responsability ( of anything really) is yours. you make sure you get things doen, you ask the right questions and you sort things out.

this seems a sensible ethos as far too many companies or local councils ime leave the responsability to someone else. if everyone takes responsability then it gets done - whatever it is.

i hope this doesn't come accross as being argumentative its not meant to be its just my humble POV

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/01/2006 14:32

Custardo - I was told very clearly when I started that they would sort out the course - it was them that wrote to the college to enrol me in the first place - I dind't even know they'd done it.

The course is definitely payed for by the home - she just forget to put my name in the letter (that was sorted over the phone when they called to speak to her - well it was the deputy on at the time but she confirmed). I didn't even know when I would be starting my NVQ until the letter arrived in the post last week.

i understand and think in future you will probably be more proactive in asking for details and joining requirements.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/01/2006 14:47

oh and this comes less than one week after I discover that our hours are changing as from Monday just gone - instead of 9.45-7.30 - it's 9.45-7 - ok it's only 1/2hr but when you're paid hourly and it's 6 hours a month - quite a chunk.

When I asked her about it when we worked together on Saturday night "Oh I must have forgotton to tell you". Apparently they've known for MONTHS that these changes would be starting but it was conviniently 'forgotton' about when discussing hours at my 2 interviews. (I'm still on probation for another month - so my contract will be written up and signed then - so haven't got a foot to stand on(,.

Then 4 1/2weeks after I'd started - I was asked (by the manager) "Have you completed your induction book"

me: "what induction book"

her: "Oh - did I not tell you about it, or give it to you. It's supposed to be complete withing 6 weeks of you starting your job.........."
