i'm interested to see who does, i do (textiles), and dh does too.

  1. do you/they work for a company or freelance (i work for a company but would love to go freelance)

  2. do your kids show any artistc flair too, would you let them follow the same career path?

I freelance somewhere between theatre work (used to be theatre designer before DD) and illustration, but work is a bit on hold until mothering small children is out of the way. I still do anything that comes along which can be made on a kitchen table. Hard to tell if DD shows signs of interest, but she is very 'visual'. Next child is still inside me, so won't hazard a guess yet... But they'll have a hard time if they don't like making things, as I'll be not letting them eat their pudding until they've completed a full line of paper dolls.

spots, my dh lectures in illustration amongst other things, his main priority is his freelance work though

I supplement my meagre academic income by designing business cards, flyers, posters etc for local groups & tradesmen, also logos for sports tour tops etc.
Doesn't pay much but keeps the creative juices flowing and is lots of fun!

MrsBadger · 10/01/2006 15:48

NB kids show no creative flair at all
Maybe they will blossom.

meggmoo · 10/01/2006 15:52

Sigh.
LK I used to be a fashion illustrator then childrenwear designer and often tut as I see what's on offer for Boys on the rails.

Ds loves painting and anything creative I am grooming him to be the next Alezander Mcqueen so he can keep me in Shoes and handbags!

JoolsToo · 10/01/2006 15:55

A really small French sounding company which smaller boutiques stocked - I also got ripped off and had some stuff in a really big supermarkets I only did it for 2 years then I was so broke I couldn't live in London anymore

lucykate · 10/01/2006 16:58

most stuff nowadays is ripped off something or other isn't it. i've seen lots of designs around which i could show you where they've got their reference material from, as we've got the same book, wrapping paper etc in our design studio. we had a few big problems with an ex designer who used to copy, then hide what she'd copied from, but when it was launched, the original designer contacted us and we had no choice but to pay her.

DH is a graphic designer. The DS1 has a def. flare when it comes to art.

XmasPud · 11/01/2006 11:13

We are both heavily involved in this line of work, me freelance for DH, DH runs his own business. Grandarents on both sides of family, and previous generation, uncles etc are all involved in art world in one form or another from professional landscape painter, written books on design, major hobbies, lecturing etc about it - definite bias towards the arts.
DD1 is very artistic and loves nothing more than spending a Sunday afternoon with nanny messing around making patterns with beads, buttons, helping her with silk painting, or with Grandpa in his studio playing with lumps of clay or mixing his paints for him. Quite idyllic really. She has won two school art comps already. bless her and she isn?t even five yet! She seems to lose herself when painting or desigining - it is magic
Not sure about DD2 yet - she loves making a mess but a bit early to tell as she is only 2!
Are yours artisitic then lucykate (sorry if already said only skim read thread as I am working..)

Enid · 11/01/2006 11:14

I used to be a designer working on a mac, then I switched to copywriting. I studied fine art/English lit at uni. Currently work for a small arts charity promoting visual art, dance and music.

dd1 is very artistic, in temperament and skill. Yes of course I would encourage her to do whatever she wanted to do.

Troutpout · 11/01/2006 13:13

Lucykate...it was at Leeds...at the old Poly.

lucykate · 11/01/2006 14:41

enid - is it you that used to or still does write for boden? (or was that a wind up!)

dd is def interested in drawing and paints quite alot. dh is a portrait painter so there is always paint of some sort around in our house. ds is too young, all he's interested in is chewing things

i'm not sure if i would want either of mine to go into textiles like i have, ime its quite poorly paid.
