I need a job but am finding it impossible!!!!

I have 2 ds's.

DS1 is at school nursery 12.25-3pm. I have ds2 at home all day.

Dh works shifts of 4 days (6am-7pm) and then 4 nights (5pm - 7am) but has four days off in between. He also works weekends.

My mom works as does my mother-in-law. On what I would earn I couldnt afford childcare. I am guessing that most of the jobs i could apply for would be around 10,000 pa (office jnr etc)

But I need the money, Is it realistic to look for work? Are there any jobs that are so flexable around?

What about working with the elderly in their own homes on the days your dp is off, agencies are often desperate for staff and can therefore be quite flexible in the hours you do. Also care homes etc often have bank staff who fill in when others are off, or just work when they can, maybe these are routes you can explore. As a partner of a shift worker i appreciate how difficult it can be, but it can be done, if you are prepared to be passing ships.

Gardeners & cleaners are always in demand you can work hours to suit you.The going rate around here is between £5-10 per hour, depending on experience ect.

I hope you find something.

Childminding?

pussycatmomma · 09/01/2006 20:58

are you aware of working tax credits and child tax credits? Depending on your circumstances they can go towards the cost of registered childcare if that was an option for you.
Even if you aren't claiming any benefits you can go along to your local Jobcentreplus office for help with finding a job, advice, training etc.

Dont you need qualifications for childminding? Anyhow, I have a hard enough time with my own kids I dont think I have the patience to childmind

The only experience I have is a few months working in HR years ago. I have been doing Access to health at college but had to defer. I just cant afford to do it.

I need a job that is really flexable. I couldnt work set days each week but I could give them dates I could work upto 6 months in advance.

Im also worried about not seeing DH, we had a rough patch a few months ago when we wernt seeing alot of each other, since then we have spent so much time together and things are so much better.

I dont think id make a good gardener - you should see the state of mine

cleaner?

take in people's ironing?

Betterware, Avon, Body shop at home?

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 09/01/2006 21:08

I used to do Ann summers but it was having to work in the evenings that was the problem - I dont drive.

I dont iron my own clothes but I do need the money so that is a possiblity

Having looked at some cleaning jobs, most seem to be early morning or evening (before and after office hours?) Dh doesnt get home til 7am so could leave the house before he gets home.

Worth looking into though thanks

I don't know how you'd go about finding someone, but I read an article a few weeks ago about home-working taking orders for big companies. Maybe google home-working and see what you can find.

Alternatives are call centres for specific shifts or temping in admin jobs.

If you are interested in Health what about applying at a local hospital for admin type jobs? The wages are usually better than average and a lot are v. flexible about part-time workers.

ambercat · 09/01/2006 21:38

join the staff bank at the hospital if you are interested in care work or admin eg ward clerk.

ido this and just ring them when i can , usualy one or two nights a month at the moment as i am child minding aswell.

i did'nt think iwould have the patience to childmind but it is different with other peoples kids, they do'nt seem to stress me as much!

nooka · 09/01/2006 22:28

Bank working looks ideal for you, and most hospitals and Primary Care Trusts (community health) run them. You should be able to look up your local Trusts on the internet and most of them will have recruitment details with phone numbers etc. Otherwise domestic cleaning is usually during the day, and there are companies that do this as well as individuals hiring directly.

Skribble · 10/01/2006 00:46

Tamba what sort of hours would you look to be doing? How many per week?

My job is really flexable but p-time. Some has to be done on certain days but at any time and some I can do whenever it suits me through the week. I do between 6 and 10 hrs per week, my friend does the same but does nearer 25 hours.

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 10/01/2006 13:19

Thank you for all your replies

I would like to work as many hours as I can when dh is off work but not in the evenings as i suppose i should spend some time with him

Bank work looks intresting, I will definatly look into that. Thanks xx

??????????????

onefootinthegravy · 10/01/2006 14:30

Tamba, I am in a similar situation. I thought about starting selling things on ebay and am going to give it a go.
Started a thread on this yesterday for some advice, it seems many people do and some make good money from it.

nutcracker · 10/01/2006 14:32

Tamba, I would join the bank at the hospital for health care staff. Then if they ring you up and you can do the shift, thats great but if you can't they are fine with it.

mamandelion · 10/01/2006 15:50

Do you have any specialist area of knowledge? If so, you could use this to buy and sell on Ebay. I know a little about books, so spend an hour or two of my free time visiting charity shops and buying stuff for 20p/50p then selling it for a profit. Sold a set recently for £35, and they only cost 20p! If you know about clothes/antiques/books or even have an interest, then it's well worth having a go. There's very little outlay, and it's always good fun poking around car boots/charity shops etc.
