Techy help! How do I cut on a word document?

spruceylucy5 · 09/01/2006 11:33

I have loads of cutting to do, say every other line. Is there a way of cutting it all at once or do i have to cut each line individually? It's very monotonous and time consuming. Help!!!!!

Are you editing text - something like an essay?

dazedandtherest · 09/01/2006 11:37

It should go onto your clipboard I think it builds up there, then you can paste it altogether somewhere else.

Toothache · 09/01/2006 11:38

Sprucey - If you hold down the Control key you can highlight lots of separate pieces of text at once..... then cut and paste as usual.

dazedandtherest · 09/01/2006 11:38

sorry what an idiot, I meant to add hold down the CTRL key and select the separate lines whilst it is held down IYKWIM

dazedandtherest · 09/01/2006 11:39

Keep getting dots between.the.words.in word, how do I stop it please?
Also my Browser will not let me deve into ANY web sites.. whats happened?

spacedonkey · 09/01/2006 11:53

The dots between the words mean you've got Show Formatting switched on. There should be a button on your toolbar with a Paragraph icon which allows you to switch it on and off. The dots and other formatting symbols won't show when you print.

someone help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think there is a shortcut sl. The CTRL key trick does work, but it's fiddly and if you accidentally "click off" you lose all your hard highlighting work. Better just to plough through it using the keyboard instead of the mouse to do the highlighting. How long is the list?

spruceylucy5 · 09/01/2006 12:06

65 pages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

spacedonkey · 09/01/2006 12:08

blimey!

Was the list generated from a database?

Anteater · 09/01/2006 12:10

Thanks Donkey, err what does the paragraph icon look like? button on the tool bar? Any ideas on website access?

spacedonkey · 09/01/2006 12:11

it looks like a "P"

spruceylucy5 · 09/01/2006 12:15

Its lists of addresses from a site listing addresses if that makes sense.

Toothache · 09/01/2006 12:15

Why don't you export it to EXCEL? It'll be MUCH easier to manipulate there.

spacedonkey · 09/01/2006 12:16

yes, Excel is a good idea - if you get the "fields" into excel columns you can just delete the ones you don't want in one go

spruceylucy5 · 09/01/2006 12:17

ok will have a go thanks

I have just realised that the page will letme see the lists in excel . So sorry for being stupid but what do I do now?

OP posts:
spacedonkey · 09/01/2006 12:22

I'm on a Wordless mac at the moment so I can't check this out, but afair you need to actually export the document to Excel (look in the File menu).

clerkKent · 09/01/2006 13:03

Once it is in Excel, make sure every column has a heading eg "line 1", add an extra column and call it "discard" or something, put an 'x' in the extra column for the addresses you want to delete, then click Data/Filter/Autofilter. You should geta drop down filter thing on every column. On the discard coumn, choose "x". All the addresses you want to keep will be hidden. Then to highlight all the dross, then press and they will all go away.

You might want to save interim versions of the document in case any steps go wrong.

It is much easier to demonstrate than to explain.
