Learning to drive at 38 - how long should it take?

I know this is a bit of a 'How long is a piece of string question', but..

I learnt to drive at 19, was almost there and then went off to uni and never took my test.

Fast forward 19 years and I'm 16 weeks pg and thinking that it might be a good idea to get this driving license thing under my (ever-incresing) belt before the baby is born.

Did anyone else out there learn (or re-learn) late? How many lessons did it take you? I really can't remember how many lessons I had last time, but that was back in the days before theory tests (not to mention picture driving licences and the internal combustion engine).

I have a 2-hour 'assessment' lesson booked this evening and am intrigued, to say the least, as to how it's going to go. I hope I haven't turned into one of those nervous old woman who take their test 40 times!

I learnt 'late' at 35 after a couple of abandoned attempts. The way I saw it was that I was going to take however many lessons I needed. I wanted to go into my test knowing I was ready to pass! It took me 4 months and I was having 4 sometimes 6 hours a week. The main thing with me was that I found an instructor who could teach me. He knew exactly how to show me things and improve my confidence.
Best of luck - I'm sure there is a learner thread on here somewhere.

Not quite the same gap, but I took about a years worth of lessons at 18 and stopped (I hated it) then started again when I was 29, did about 40 hours of lessons and 3 tests over 12 weeks.

The first lesson went quite well I thought. I didn't freak out and get all nervy at any point, which I was worried I might. I have another 2 hours booked on Monday (initial 4 hours are £60 - I can't believe what an expensive business this is), so hopefully I'll have an idea after that.

On a lighter note - my driving instructor looked a lot like Neil from the Inbetweeners - you know you are getting old when driving instructors look young - although he had to be at least 28 from what he was saying.

I've had an hour a week over the course of a year. Had loads of awful instructors before then. Am similarly waiting till I know I can't fail before taking my test early next year.

Good luck!

I was in the same position as you. Learnt at 19 and never took my test. Started to learn when I was pregnant with ds. I took my test at 8 months preg and failed. Took it again when I was 9 weeks preg with dd and passed. I took quite a few lessons a d always in 2 hour blocks which I found useful.

I'm so pleased I did it and can't believe I did not do it sooner. I have so much freedom now and my life is so much easier!

Good luck with it all!

take it easy..
If you see it easy, it is easy..
if you see it difficult it is difficult..

good luck!

I had lessons at 18, went to uni and stopped them. Then had lessons from 22-24 and failed several tests.

Had an eight year break. Started lessons aged 32, had about 25 hours and passed my test. I was almost 33 when I passed.
