I buy a ticket every week. Not just in case I win, but in the hopes I'd win! Odds are crap, sure, but I don't buy magazines - have three on subscription, one of which is a gift every Mothering Sunday - newspapers, etc.

No, I don't know anyone who's won, but I know my life and many others' would be if I won!

One of my close friends won the jackpot a few years ago.

I'm a regular poster BTW

I bough a ticket every week for the first year and won £10

I now never buy a ticket as I believe it is just a poor mans dream, I find it very sad when stood in a queue and the person in front of you obviously can't afford to dress themselves very well but still buys £20 worth of tickets and scratch cards.

It certainly changed their life from a struggling young couple to a comfortable existence where neither parent has to work.

They are a lovely family.

Don't you hate the people though who say they want to just carry on as before. Same house, same car, same life. Why????

stitch · 03/01/2006 16:29

odds of you winning are about 1 in 47 million.

tempchange · 03/01/2006 16:29

IMO there's no point in doing the lottery if it doesn't change your life

What are the odds of winning the Lotto Extra jackpot?
The odds are 1 in 13,983,816. This is the same as the 6/49 game as we use the same 6 from 49 matrix. Matching all six numbers to those drawn in Lotto Extra will win the Lotto Extra jackpot, or a share of it if there is more than one winning ticket.

from the Lotto website

I had a colleague who had won a few million several years ago. He'd won it before taking that job. He invested it and carried on working, doing a very tough job - very well. He also spent a long time out in Iraq with the TA a couple of years ago. He certainly doesn't need to work financially, but I think he needs to for all other reasons!

cathyspam · 03/01/2006 16:53

someone i know won about 60,000 on the lottery a few years ago and he bought himself a wee house - he still spends most of his time around at his dads though!

A friend of a friend won quite a bit and paid all their children's mortgages off

TinyGang · 03/01/2006 17:00

I do think the prizes should be smaller and more of them.

From what I've seen most people's dreams seem to be well covered by about 500 000 to a million. Winning 10 million+ is a bit mind blowing really.

iota · 03/01/2006 17:25

Tinygang - you think too small - £500,000 would just buy you a nice 5 bed house on a housing estate here in MK.

I'd need at least £2 million to change our life

TinyGang · 03/01/2006 18:46

Yeah, you're right actually! 2-5 million'll do nicely. I'll take that. Anyone got the right numbers then?

SueW · 03/01/2006 19:58

There are two lottery winners living close to me! One was a teacher at a local school who won 2.2m, the other a local man who had lived in the same 2-up, 2-down all his life. Because I don't know them, I have no idea what difference it has made to their lives really other than a bigger house and the teacher went part-time, then left but has been teaching p-t again. It's also rumoured someone I have met recently belongs to a 'lottery family' but I haven't asked her.

Someone at work won 250k a few years ago before I started there. I reckon that's prob all the lottery luck run out here. Or maybe we're a really lucky area and the place to live to win!

I'm part of a syndicate at work. There are about 30 of us and we pay two quid a week. Last year I paid in 104 quid and our winnings were 33 quid!!! Still I reckon I saved about a fiver a week by stopping smoking (2-3/day) and I no longer go out and about buying lattes so I'm not worried about it.

SueW · 03/01/2006 19:59

BTW teacher was allegedly told that 2.2m wasn't enough to change his life drastically.

changeagain · 04/01/2006 13:00

It depends on how you spend it whether or not 2 million would change your life I suppose.

harpsichordcarrier · 04/01/2006 13:03

my dad used to do a pools round and he had a jackpot winner on his round
they won about £800k I think whch was a lot in those days and for the area.
they moved away after a year or so
it was horrible - so much resentment and bad feeling

harpsichordcarrier · 04/01/2006 13:03

[I never play the lottery btw. well I bought it ticket on my wedding day because my mum made me...]

Jodee · 04/01/2006 13:06

Does anyone know if that £9 million was claimed at the weekend, the 6 month deadline was up?
