How can this be?!!

I am sick with worry and am so cross with myself. I was making toast for dd2's tea, and when my back was turned she walked into the kitchen. I turned round just in time to see her reaching into the grill. I shouted out and dragged her away, and she cried a little bit, more in shock than anything, then was fine, smiling, and giggling etc. I looked at her hand and the skin was peeling away from two tiny spots on her knuckles and her fingers looked red, so I held her hand under running cold water, but she seemed to feel no pain whatsoever!!! She is not crying, not looking at her hand, not distressed in anyway, and eating her tea, but her hand looks burnt!! Is this normal? What should I do?

I'd call the emergency docs, tbh, or go straight to A&E. Burns are nasty and skin can keep burning for some time. Did you keep her fingers under the tap for a long time? Needs to be longer than you'd think, IYSWIM.

edam · 02/01/2006 18:06

Oh, and don't beat yourself up about it, we all have near misses or stupid accidents. Ds managed to find some rat poison once (I didn't even know we had any in the house...).

Bomper · 02/01/2006 18:07

Held them under for as long as she'd let me, but as she's only 21 months, it was quite difficult. Is is possible she has no feeling in her fingers? How come she's not screaming?!

Sounds like she just got a very slight burn. Personally I wouldnt bother with taking her anywhere.

Crystaltips · 02/01/2006 18:08

Has she shown signs that she can feel pain before .... IYKWIM ?

Loobie · 02/01/2006 18:13

Right ok not wanting to sound alarmist but burns are funny buggers,if someone has a deep enough burn to cause nerve damage they will not feel any pain in the injury.Hard to tell this without seeing your daughter but i would call NHS24 to be sure or take her to a&e.

Bomper · 02/01/2006 18:13

Yes, on other areas of her body, IYSWIM. For example she has fallen face first on our wooden floor and screamed for England (unsurprisingly!!) but she's never hurt her fingers before. I have heard of children who cannot feel pain before but I suppose that would mean they couldn't feel pain anywhere in their bodies. Sorry, rambling, just feeling worried!!

actually after reading last post I would take her to A & E then.

Bomper · 02/01/2006 18:23

Going to take her to Emergency Docs

Hope she's ok. Let us know how she is, bless her.

Twiglett · 02/01/2006 19:23

hope she's ok .. and also agree the deeper the burn the less pain

Frizbetheexpansionset · 02/01/2006 19:39

Ohh ouch, hope she's ok

Loobie · 03/01/2006 11:02

Bomper how is she? Did you get the emergency docs?
Hope all is ok,let us know

MerlinsBeard · 03/01/2006 15:05

bomper...did u go to the dr?

Bomper · 03/01/2006 15:32

Thanks for your concern, it's really nice of you. Yes, I did take her to the Dr's, he said that although her burns were quite deep, they were very small, I had to hold her hand in cold water for ten minutes (which wasn't easy I can tell you, she was screaming her head off!! Then wrap damp, cloth, bandages around her hand and give her Calpol. She seems fine today, I don't know what I am going to do about her bath though, as it's gonna sting her hand like buggary!!

OP posts:
tillykins · 03/01/2006 15:36

Glad she is okay
Don't bother bathing her, she isn't going to get lice for missing one bath
Just give her an allover wash for a few days

Bomper · 07/01/2006 11:36

Dd's hand is starting to heal but dh thinks it's looking like its getting infected (the little scabs that are forming over the burns have a sort of yellowish colour). Does anyone know what I can put on them to help them heal more quickly? I have been putting Tea Tree and Witch Hazel cream on them but she just licks it straight off!!!!

colditz · 07/01/2006 12:22

take her back to the doctor's, she might need some antibiotic cream or something. I wouldn't risk it getting infected, like you said they are quite deep burns.
