Nelson's Teetha, anyone know if it's harmful when used constantly

Hi all

Bit of a dull question im afraid. Dd having a mare with back molars all popping through at same time. She's 2 and these are the last ones. She's always had quite a lot of probs with teething. I have given her Nelson's Teetha, a homeopathic rememdy. Basically teething granules that make your mouth go numb. I wondered if it is possible that they can have bad side effects if used too frequently. She asks for one every night at bedtime. I looked on the ingredients and it says "each 300mg sachet contains 6c homeopathic potency of Chamomilla. Also contains lactose, xylitol and starch".
I suddenly woke up in the middle of the night and got very worried that they may have some nasty side effect if used continuously etc.

is she suffering in the day? I am always suspicious of babies whose teeth only hurt at night!

Hi Codswallop, yes always got her hands in her mouth, hot red cheeks and a bit temperamental (more than usual and that's a lot believe me

did a surf and cant see any mention of addiction! Sure other people will know. Is it the habit aspect too?

Tillysmummy · 02/11/2003 18:39

yes i guess im afraid she will get into a habit but am also v aware that at the moment it's v genuine because I can see the blood and gore in her mouth !!! She has had a lot of calpol for a virus recently to bring temp down so am reluctant to give her too much more for a week or two.

Well, lactose is in milk, and that isn't a problem for most people, and starch is in spuds and pasta etc, and again for most it isn't a problem. I don't know that much about Xylitol, so I looked up it's toxicity on the web. The amount needed to kill rabbits is 25g per Kg of body weight given as a single dose. I can't find out how much Xylitol is present, but it would be much less than the lethal dose for rabbits.

I'm not the person to ask about homeopathic remedies

It's not a habit or addiction ( a word used far too freely IMO!) just that she likes the taste - it's sweet - and I think they also like the comfort of being given medicine - placebo effect, if you like. It can't possibly do her any harm to have buckets of the stuff as the active ingreident is present in less than microscopic quantities.

It's a low potency and is therefore fine to use as often as needed. Is it helping her? if it is carry on, otherwise I would stop giving it n(ot becuase it'll do her harm as such just becuase homeopaths prefer to give nothing unless needed) Chamomilla never really helped ds2 with teething- he was more of a pulsatilla teether ( very clingy).

Hi Ladies. Thanks for the advice. Hmb thanks for looking that up. Aloha and JimJams yes I think you are probably right. She doesn't have buckets of it. She has one before bed and sometimes one in the night if very bad. When her teeth are playing up she wakes in the night. When they are not she doesn't so I know it's not habit from that point of view.

We used it a lot and so far have had no side effects. The only thing is that I think the lactose is a form of sugar so I did not give it at bedtime (or you could brush her teeth afterwards or let her chew on a toothbrush which they sometimes like when teething). It is cheaper to get a little tube of chamomilla pillules, which are too small for any choking risk. You can also give her cooled down camomile tea - like Peter Rabbit's mother.

codswallop · 03/11/2003 12:44

aah oop - cute

Enid · 03/11/2003 12:52

chamomilla pillules are good and they really helped with dd2's teething binges but I would echo Jimjams point about only use them if you really need to as homeopaths prefer to use nothing unless symptoms are clearly present...you could also take her to a homeopath, they are great for kids ailments.

I am addicted to my homeopath, he is also quite gorgeous so that helps

I used it for my children and found it really was the best thing and they didn't crave it and when teething was over they didn't want it just for the taste etc. Hope this helps.

Oh my gosh, I just love this medicine! I live in the US and am always trying new homeopathic medicines for an alternative to Tylenol, cold medicine, etc. It is really expensive to get this medicine (for me, with the shipping cost from England to America) but I highly recommend it. I only use it maybe about 1-3x times a week, when teeth are coming through, so I am not really too sure about your concerns. I would definitely talk to your pediatrician or call your poison control hot line (if you have one). They are very informative. Over here, in the Us, Hylands Teething tablets are very popular, they are made up of calcarea phosphorica 3x, chamomilla 3x, coffea cruda 3x, and belladona 3x. All aid in irritability, wakefulness, redness, and inflammation. You might want to give those a try as well. My daughter once got a hold of the bottle of the Hyland teething tabs and I contacted our local poison control and they said she would be fine, it scared me to death as well!! I would think that the reason people are so fond of homeopathic medicine is because it is a natural "better for your body" alternative, so I wouldn't worry too much. But definitely ask your pediatrician on your next visit to settle your nerves.
