I have a friend who is a life coach. From what I can gather, it's really effective. It should be- she's been through far more than most people- and she's a good listener. I think (it may have to depend on the Coach) you have to be willing to be open minded and perhaps hear a few things you don't want to, If you're ready, I'd say go for it.

Be aware that anyone can call themselves a life coach. They are not regulated and you don't have to have any particular qualification. So if you go for it, check up on the life coach you choose or maybe shop around a bit to find someone experienced.

Yes, my sister is one. I was a bit grumpy and negative about it recently on here, but all I can say is that she had life coaching herself and states it totally changed her life. She was able to lose weight, sort out baggage from the past, rethink her career etc. with the help of the coach and found it of such use that she decided to train as one herself.

Yep, have seen two. One - quite famous in the life coaching circles - was a complete charlatan, however very effective as she was bossy and practically bullied me into action but it left a rather bad taste in the mouth. The other was rather ineffective, more passive and more into NLP which I don't really get. If nothing else you get to be very self-indulgent and whinge about yourself to someone who is paid to listen. I was in my late 20's when I went through my life coaching stage - part of me thinks I should find one again but it's really hard to separate the charlatans from the good ones.

my sister is one too, and all she does is try to life coach me - gets right up my nose, I'm not a great believer and think she gets paid far too much for what she does.

If you look into life coaching you find a lot of the time is spent with life coaches coaching each other, which is kind of odd.

I think there are better ways to get organised, although there must be good ones out there.

I'm very cynical about this sort of thing - self-help books and so on. CQ is quite right that anyone can call themselves a coach so you have to be wary. It's important that coaches don't stray into counselling as well, and end up causing chaos that they don't know how to handle.

However, I did end up having life coaching myself - friend who was having it reccomended her coach who was a student and therefore free. I was a bit miserable at the time so thought I'd give it a go. Amazed to discover it was actually very helpful and gave me the push I needed to resign from my job and go freelance. MUCH happier now. So, if you can find someone you trust, I'd certainly think about it.

Oh, if you want to CAT me I can give you the details of my life coach. She's fully trained now so will charge, but if you'd like a personal recommendation. She's in Scotland but does sessions over the phone. She did everything 'right' in terms of knowing the limits of coaching and encouraging me to come up with the answers, not her, IYSWIM.

Crystaltips · 01/01/2006 20:59

Thanks edam I will CAT you .... how much are we talking for a life coach ???
