Help! Need to buy a present today! Any ideas?

Have just realised I need to buy a present today! Just a little something (£20?) but it's Sunday and I can't get out, DP will need to go get it.

So basically I need to send DP to the supermarket with a good idea of what to buy. Has anyone seen anything nice in the home / gift parts of the supermarkets recently? Or can recommend a good book / DVD they might stock?

My friend is in her early 30s. She's into outdoorsy stuff and plays sport. She likes to read. She likes quirky, arty stuff, she likes cooking and stuff for the house. So for example one of the supermarkets (is it Sainsbury's?) is doing a pepper-pot that looks like Sergent Pepper. If she hadn't seen us give that to someone else last week that would have been a great start!

She's not a girly girl at all, so no make up / handbags / chick lit etc.
We'll get chocolates / booze as a back up but I'd really like to get something a bit more personal (really wish I'd remembered earlier!)

We've got big versions of all the usual supermarkets round here (Asda, Sainsbury's & Tescos) and a medium sized Waitrose.

I tried looking on their websites but that's their "direct" services, not what's actually in stock.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

All I can think of is nice cheeses - not very helpful I'm afraid!

Thanks for the suggestion :) Actually not a bad idea, I'll mull that one :)

oh good :) or talking about 'mull' you could pretty up some mulling spices to go with a bottle of red wine.

Buy a small basket from the homeware section and fill it with weird and wonderful foods (plus a couple of bars of nice chocolate)? Sainsbury's do a 'foods of the world' section so maybe three of things from there at £3-4 each, plus £3 on two bars of chocolate (usually some offers on). You can line the bottom with scrunched up tissue paper/shredded coloured paper if you have a shredder.

Good suggestions thanks :) DP decided he actually couldn't go out after all as had to get some work done but I managed to rustle up a present from a stash of quality tat bits I've picked up with Christmas in mind. Phew!

Good idea though, thanks, I'll use them next time I need an emergency present!
