Someone has stolen my ebay account and locked me out - they are trying to sell some high value computers in my name - has anyone had any experience of this?

I had this exact same problem a few months back. I used to get emails telling me that I had sucessfully listed my 42inch widescreen telly with a start price of £1500 ! They also changed my password on my account so that I couldn;t use it. I had to take several approaches, one was contact Ebay directly (you can do this without accessing your account), it took them forever to do something about it but it really freaked me out. I also changed my email address. Ebay removed the fraudulent listings and any charges connected and also changed my username. At one point I was getting 50 emails a day from people 'aking seller a question' ! It's a real f*ing pain, but it will be resolved. Email Ebay immediately

My DH's grandpa had this happen to him 2 months ago, tried to sell plasma screens.

Have you given out your details to any official looking ebay emails??

Go to www.ebay.com (not uk) click on help right at the top, follow the link in the pop up page for the security centre, there should be a link for account theft. You should be able to sort it out fairly straightforwarly if you have security question set up.

I will check with DH how he fixed his grandpa's account when he gets home.

They were also trying to sell a childs motorcross bike on it too. I was concerned because my bank, personal and credit card details were attached to that account.

Fine vintage
thanks for your reply. The email address attached to my account has been changed so I am totally frozen out.
How long did ebay take to sort out the problem for you? And what problems did it cause for you?
I am in the middle of selling a few genuine items!
I think I went wrong by replying to a request for info which looked as though it had come from ebay...

Thanks ks, it is quite scary, I am a bit panicked - not sure exactly what problems will follow on...

scoobysnax, did you set up a security question? It shouldn't matter about the email change if you did.

scoobysnax · 31/10/2003 17:07

I did set one up but when I answer it ebay sends an email to the new email address which the hijacker linked to my account, so it didn't seem to help me really

Poor you scoobysnax. There have been loads of scam emails that are very very convincing asking people to type in their eBay details again. If you look on the "Community" boards on eBay there's lots on there about it. You could get a new ID to post on there, but there's more than enough expertise and good advice on here by the looks of it!

scoobysnax · 31/10/2003 20:07

thanks Tamum
I have partially recovered from the feeling of terror and vulnerability that cyber crime seems to have brought on in me, managed to get back into the halloween spirit of jollity a bit and am about to open my first bottle of vino in 3 months to drown my sorrows!
Next thing I know someone will have nicked my mumsnet ID!!!

OP posts:
scoobysnax · 04/11/2003 08:39

Just to pass on the benefit of my experience, I would strongly advise all mumsnetters to only use passwords not listed in the dictionary, and to always include numbers AND letters, and a combination of upper and lower case letters!

I used easy to remember passwords on my email, thinking it wasn;t much of a security risk, but having had it hacked into and diverted to a fraudster's email address, I have a different opinion...

Sorry scooby, I've been away from this for a while and so haven't replied to your Q's. Looks like I don't need to now though as it would appear that you are sorted.
