Storing playmobil

DS1 got some for christmas, need to try and stop DS2 from eating it.
Do you keep it in original boxes, store all playmobil together so sets are mixed or some other ingenius solution?

I hate playmobil.
It is boring to assemble, too small and awkward to play with - they knock bits over and get so frustrated. My DD2 eats it too.
I prefer ELC Happy Land stuff as more robost and simple.
My darling sister knows this but insisted on buying some playmobil for DD1 this year (just to annoy me I suspect).
It has all gone in a cheap plastic tub from Asda and on top of a wardrobe. Hoping DD1 will forget it is there so that it can move to a more permanent home such as a bin bag
sorry - not the answer you were looking for, I imagine!. Personally, I would just mix up the sets and bung in a plastic tub all together, just like lego.

JenumGeranium · 30/12/2005 11:26

Yeah. I just put all the bits together in a plastic tub! There are sooo many bits!

Maddison · 30/12/2005 11:27

DS1 has loads of it, plus some new stuff he got for xmas.

We haven't kept the original boxes so instead we got a storage tower with 4 drawers and tbh it's a bit of a pain because everything is mixed up. On the plus side it does look tidier, which is what we were aiming for.

We even had to get 2 more of these towers after xmas though because we now have all DS2's toys to contend with!

ds2 has loads of playmobil. we keep all the little bits, people etc in one lidded wooden box and the big bits, like the pirate ship, noahs ark, aeroplane all go on shelves in his cupboard as they are too big to put in a box.

xmaspud - do your kids love playmobil though, are they too young for it yet? ds2 is 4 in january and has been playing well with his for a few months now, but when we got it for him last xmas he was a nightmare with it as kept breaking the sails of the pirate ship.

charliecat · 30/12/2005 12:46

We have a couple of big toys boxes just for playmobil and the kids pick and mix what they want out of them. Totally pointless trying to keep it even semi-organised IME.

I use storage drawers for all the little bits and pieces, in the vain hope they wont get lost. For the bigger things we are lucky enough to have a huge cupboard to put them in. The train track lives in its oringal box though. If you can, keep the boxes and the instructions as playmobile has a good resell value when your children have out-grown it

I think the mixing is part of the fun. We dress the Viking knights up and put them on the fire engine, or make the policeman cycle round the ramparts of the castle saying "now then, now then" while the catapault is shelling the mother and baby on the bike (while the mother is drinking a goblet of wine).

octavia · 30/12/2005 15:57

sounds like great fun ! at present ds darlek has highjacked a train full of pirates and the holiday home is on fire and the people in it are being rescued by ghosts !

Glitterygook · 30/12/2005 16:00

LOL anchovy!

So far we have the big stuff on shelves (plane, police station, ship (well, not assembled yet but it will do!). Atm, the police station bits are kept in the cell part of the station. Aeroplane bits inside the aeroplane. Don't know if there's a space under deck to put the ship bits in.

Agree they are bitty - I really enjoyed putting the police station together (saddo) but ds3 (16 months) keeps pulling the mast off and the little potted plants that make it look pretty

My ds loves playmobil. Have been keeping it in some of the orginal boxes but have just bought bargain curver boxes from sainsbury's sale which look like fishing tackle boxes but smaller and all the fiddly bits are going into it as we type. My ds is very good at keeping little bits together. when I tidy up and have handfuls of things I don't know where to put, he knows exactly what each thing is from- ie meccano, bob lego, present from childminder last xmas etc. It is worth a lot secondhand so am trying to hang onto it all. Will probably not sell it though, but keep it as my mum has done so my grandkids can play with it!

Enideepmidwinter · 30/12/2005 16:38

super glue the fiddly bits on permanently

then keep it in little plastic storage from Ikea

Glitterygook · 31/12/2005 00:18

Enid - I actually thought about glueing it all together today. Hmm, might even do it.

myrrhthamoo · 31/12/2005 00:20

I am thinking about glueing the guns into the Clone Troopers' hands

Enideepmidwinter · 31/12/2005 09:36

honestly it is the way forward

no more tiny blood pressure cuffs underfoot (now perma-glued onto side of ambulance)
no more tiny king bangles in the dustpan (now permanently on kings tiny wrists)

merrySOAPBOXingday · 31/12/2005 11:47

Nooooooo!

Heresy - my DS would not be a happy bunny if he couldn't use all the little bits

I suppose what they don't know they don't miss though!

LIZS · 31/12/2005 12:11

We don't get all the coins etc out to begin with so they can't get lost or become hoover fodder !! We are already 2 flowers down on the mansion (serious temptation to use glue). Most of the figures and accessories live in one of the plastic Ikea drawers but the large pieces are mainly still packed in their original boxes from our move this summer as we don't have the room to get them out . Not sure where the new mansion and castle are going to live yet !
