Computer help needed!

Any help with our current computer problem would be much appreciated :
I've been trying to do this week's on-line tesco shop for a couple of days, but the site is scrolling so slowly that it's impossible. Other sites don't seem to be affected as badly, although typing and screen refreshing still isn't brilliant.
We've got broadband so it should be super-quick, right?
This has happened a couple of times before on the tescos site but never this badly and never for so long.
Is this something to do with my computer? Can I do anything about it?
Thanks!

Just had a look at the Tesco site, and it seemed to be OK for me, which may suggest that it's your PC. But then why is it not happening on other sites? Is it because there's lots of pictures on Tesco?
Sorry, probably not much help

Have you tried clearing your tempoary files?

pie · 31/10/2003 09:36

temporary of course

Pie may be right. When our computer gets slow it's usually because the memory is getting too full. We delete old emails and temporary files, and delete a lot of stuff from the hard drive too - the internet records take up a lot of space.

It could be that your PC is running slowly, and that you only notice it on some sites (the fact that it's slow to type suggests this).

Try doing a disk cleanup and disk de-frag (if you're using windows, both are in programmes>accessories>system tools).

It could also be that the connection between you and Tescos is slow - do you know anyone else with the same type of broadband connection? If so, get them to check the tescos site when you find the problem. If they have a problem too, phone the provider. Yes, broadband can be slow sometimes!

If neither of the above work, it may be time to call in a technician.

lucy123, e-frag is a good idea too, but nursie before you start one just know that it can take a couple of hours if you have a large HD.

Clean out the temporary internet files, clean up you DH and then de-frag.

If those don't speed things up then its probably a tesco/connection thing rather than your computer.

If things are generally slow and what's already suggested doesn't help, then another idea might be to try downloading Windowwasher (free for a trial period) which will do a more thorough job of cleaning out leftover debris on your PC than you could do manually or using the "delete temporary files" options in IE.

Another thing you could try is checking that you haven't managed to pick up any spyware or the like, using Spysweeper - again free to use for a trial period.
