Is Marmite actually 'good' for you?

I have always been under the impression that it was!! I was given it a lot as a child, when it used to be nicknamed 'The growing-up spread', and my mum used to say it was really good for me, so I have always assumed that it was - is it?

Lots of B vitamins so "yes". And lots of salt so "no".

beansprout · 29/12/2005 20:52

It's not great in huge quantities as it is v salty but it has B vitamins which I don't tend to get else where (veggie) so yes, like a lot of things, it is good for you in moderation.

mazzystar · 29/12/2005 20:52

lots of vitamin b i think

but salty

so not sure on what that means

WigWamBam · 29/12/2005 20:52

It's yeast extract so lots of B vitamins ... still tastes foul though!

mazzystar · 29/12/2005 20:53

so at least we are all agreed

Bomper · 29/12/2005 20:53

Oh well, not totally bad then, my children now love it on toast every now and again, so that's ok.

It certainly stops my dh from wanting to kiss me because he loathes it! Not sure if that's "good" or "bad"!!!

festiveface · 29/12/2005 21:27

ds1 used to love it when he was a toddler and being a bit green ( not considering all the salt ) i used to let him eat marmite butties every night before bed with his drink of milk.
didn't do any harm!

ShortAndStripySolsticer · 29/12/2005 22:38

I craved it near the beginning of both of my pregnancies (and special k!) it turns out it contains folic acid (as does special k). Healthier than most spreads I think but depends whether you view sugar as worse than salt or vice versa .

That guy who analyses the celebrity shopping baskets in Observer Food Monthly (John Biffa?) always tuts when he sees it because of the salt content. Mind you he's very down on bread too and I'd have thought that was a debatable one so maybe he's a food freak who's wrong?

It is? I thought it was ok if brown and wholegrain?

tillykins · 29/12/2005 23:21

and its cheap

bobbybobbobbingalong · 30/12/2005 05:12

Good Food for dieters as fewer calories than jam. But then bad because the salt helps you retain lots of lovely water.

Biting insects won't touch you if you eat it every morning when camping!

Does Marmite have added iron - which could account for the "growing up" bit.

veuveclicquot · 30/12/2005 09:24

Oh hell. I am an anti salt fiend and my australian nanny feeds DD vegemite on a daily basis. I hadn't even thought about the salt - I'd obviously been sucked in by the good press. Right. New regime in the new year. My nanny will think I'm barking. Vegemite sparingly! Who ever heard of such a thing?!

bobbybobbobbingalong · 30/12/2005 18:06

She might take it as a slight on her very being...
