Anybody got a built-under double oven?

If so, what make and how do you find it? We have a single oven atm and I would love to have a double but wonder if the grill+smaller main oven restricts what you can easily put in.

It is in a 600mm space atm but there is a small cupboard alongside - not sure if it's 200 or 300 - I suppose I could look at a wider one? Any suggestions?

Hi Janh! Did you have a good Christmas?

Gingerbear · 28/12/2005 20:59

Janh, we have a Stoves built under double electric oven, the main oven is a fan assisted and great. Cooked a huge turkey in the main oven and a 4lb leg of pork in the small top oven/grill (not fan assisted)at Christmas, no problems.

Oh, Cliff, I am sorry I missed you in Manchester , are you having a spiffing time in Blighty?

Janh · 28/12/2005 21:01

Ah, thanks gb, that was what I was wondering as we had the same (but where did you put the roasties etc?)

Hi Rhubarb! Yes thanks, did you? And where are you now (in Wantage or still up here? I got your timetable confused!)

Mine's a Creda Cachet, and it's OK - not brilliant but not too bad either. The really big problem with it is that there are still only three shelves in total, and I can't get spares! I still only have the same amount of cooking space as I had in my old single oven.

MerryKidMas · 28/12/2005 21:02

We have a hotpoint one and I think its great. Our one is 600mm wide. The main oven is fan assisted but the top one isn't, so the top one cooks slower.
I like being able to set them at different temperatures, not that I use the oven that often!

Rhubarb · 28/12/2005 21:04

We're in Wantage till Sat aft. Hi GB, not Cliff anymore! It got boring! Thank feck it's all over eh?

Sorry, I seem to have hijacked again, haven't a clue about ovens, where we are they have a fan oven and an ordinary one, not sure why?

Gingerbear · 28/12/2005 21:04

roasties around the joint of course! I like the look of those range ovens, but they are huse and expensive IMO, and other than xmas, wouldn't get used here.

Janh · 28/12/2005 21:05

We only have 2 shelves in ours though, wwb. DH cooks Christmas dinner and had a fairly large turkey balanced on top of one tiny roaster (dribbling fat all over the oven floor) in order to cram it in alongside another with the pork in and still have room for the roasties on the other shelf (later on admittedly, but then there were the stuffing and the chipolatas and the Yorkshires too...it was a bit hairy!)

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 28/12/2005 21:06

It was hairy here too even with the three shelves ... two different joints, one veggie roast, stuffing, parsnips, roasties (not around the roast!), Yorkshire puddings ... I really miss a bigger oven!

Gingerbear · 28/12/2005 21:06

Rhuby, you shall be Cliff in my space forever

BTW, did JCB stay at No1 for Christmas? I saw Luke on the News, he is rather lovely isn't he?

thecattleareALOHing · 28/12/2005 21:07

We used to have a built under double oven and it was useful - better than a single one definitely.

And thanks a million Jan! Ds loves his jigsaws. We were putting pink elephants together after tea tonight!

thecattleareALOHing · 28/12/2005 21:07

He would send you a card only....he thinks Father Christmas gave it to him...

Janh · 28/12/2005 21:07

Our roasties wouldn't fit around anything, we eat a lot of them and they need their own tin!

Anyway 3 recommendations out of 3 so far (even if WWB's is a bit half-hearted )

Rhuby, couldn't find anybody around Wantage for you but hope you have a nice time there anyway.

HE'S MINE!!!!! And no sadly they didn't, Vomitbreath from The Talentless Show nicked it.

Sorry again Jan, I do hope you get sensible replies about your oven!

Janh · 28/12/2005 21:11

That's great, aloha - happy to let FC take the credit and I'm very glad he likes them (thought he would, such happy smiling mad-coloured beasts )

Another vote for hotpoint here. Again only the main oven thats fan assisted but even the top oven cooks really quickly.

flashingnose · 29/12/2005 09:14

We have a Stoves as well - really like the double aspect of it for all the reasons below but have had endless problems with condensation running down the doors and leaking onto the floor .

Janh · 29/12/2005 18:23

Another question!

I've been googling and there seem to be 2 styles now.

The first (like this ) is the original style with the buttons across the top, a full-width shallow top oven and a full-width deeper bottom oven;

the second (like this ) has the buttons beside the top oven which is the same depth (apparently) as the bottom, but narrower - it looks as if the bottom oven is the same size and shape as the first kind.

Logically the deeper narrower top oven would be more useful for roasting etc; probably less useful for baking but I don't bake anyway.

Stoves .. but it is the one we inherited (we actually kept it when we changed to our super-duper kitchen because I like it and find it easy and spacious

Twiglett · 29/12/2005 18:29

thing is Jan .. if both ovens are the same size then they will both be smaller than the big oven on the one that has the smaller top oven IYSWIM

so if you get a tall roast (chicken / turkey) it might not fit in

JackFrostStini · 29/12/2005 18:33

Have got a Creda 600mm & find space ok having 3 shelves and using the base.
Top tip for Sunday dinners is I whack it up high for the roasties & yorksire puddings then transfer the meat to the top oven (which is off but heated from the main oven below))where it stays nice and warm & rests while the roasties finish.
Useful to have separate oven & grill too.
