DS (15 months) waking up soaked - any solutions?

DS has been in Motherease since birth but has recently started waking up soaking wet both in the morning and after his naps (which can be 3 hours).

He is in the nappy plus booster plus stay dry liner (as extra padding) and obviously a wrap as well. He has also been in Moltex but has been soaking those and in desperation last night I bought him a Tots Bots plus booster but he was still wet this morning.

The only one solution which has worked so far is a Moltex plus wrap but I am loathe to spend money on Moltex if I don't have to.

I have cut down on his milk so he has less than a pint of goat's milk during the day but he does drink a lot of water which I don't want to discourage.

Is this another thing he will grow out of or is there a better combination of nappy?

Could it be down to 'willy gymnastics' ?! As the mum of a DD, I (thankfully) don't have to contend with rogue danglies when it comes to nappy changing ! Is his willy moving to one side and causing sideways leaks IYSWIM ? Sorry not a very eloquent or knowledgable post but I seem to remember another mum of a boy having a similar leaky nappy prob and this was a suggestion made by another MNer. I think it was the case for that particular little chap.

Gem13 · 30/10/2003 10:45

I don't think so, as the nappies are so soaked we could wring them out.

We need some super abosorbent ones I think - any cloth ideas?

Sorry, I'm not a clothie. Hopefully someone will post something useful asap

Gem13, I have not used Motherease nappies (just the wraps) but as I understand it they are not as absorbant as something like Tots Bots. My DS2 is 17 months and uses Tots Bots during the day and then a stuffable nappy at night (either a Minki or a Bear Behind), these are stuffed with a terry square and can been boosted too (usually use a Twinkle Twooster), we have found these very successful at night. HTH.

Gem13 · 30/10/2003 11:39

Thanks demented I'll look into those.

I thought we were on the home straight now with nappies, starting to think about potty training but it seems I jumped the gun!

Is it worth spending more money? If he's peeing so much you can wring it out, that's a serious amount of wee. What's he like during the day? How old is he? I personally would just put anything absorbent down there - 2 flannels folded into quaters, a couple of boosters folded in half etc and right at the front, literally on the willy. If it's just at nioght time, you don't need to worry too much about bulk, I wouldn't have thought.

Gem13 · 30/10/2003 16:18

Thanks monkey - I shall try and boost the nappy some more with flannels. It's not so much an issue about money, just that as we have been going down the washable route for so long now and that's what he's in during the day, it's a shame to put him in a disposable at night.

I think it's probably because he's a light sleeper so every time he stirs, he wees and that's quite a lot for a night (he sleeps through for 12 hours). He's fine during his waking hours but we have had wet bedclothes after long daytime naps.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's a phase!

if he's weeing that much, a disposable probably wouldn't make any difference anyway. Both my 2 ds's were in washables, I occasionally, but not often had night time really wet nappies & just used the flannels or whatever. I know at the end of the day the money isn't nec that big a deal, but why spend more and why lumber yourself with more stuff? I've got 2 basket-fulls of nappies, wraps, boosters. Drives dh mad. Just got number 2 out of nappies a couple of months ago & no. 3 due in a fortnight, so not bothered to pack them away.

Incidentally, my bf's ds soaks himself through & all his bedding every night & he is in disposables, so I guess if they wee a lot it doesn't make much difference which sort you use, except of course it's easier to padd out washables.

Let's hope it's just a phase.

DH will love the next question - like monkey, we thought we had everything nappywise in readiness for DS but every month we seem to buy more or bigger wraps, more wipes, more liners, plus disposables for the childminder...

so bloss, where can I get the woollen wraps and what is your DS wearing underneath?

my dd2 was waking up soaked a week or so ago, so i have got some booster pads (kooshies i think they were) and now she has 4 booster pads in at night and no leaks, we use tots bots and motherease wraps. it does make her nappy a bit more bulky, but it seems to have worked for now at least.

Enid · 31/10/2003 09:58

Hemp washables are supposed to be much more absorbent than cotton.

As an update to this thread...

I rang the Nappy Lady from the website who said that DS probably needed bigger wraps as the nappies should be able to take a real soaking without leaking.

I went to the next size up (XL Motherease poppers) and success!

Thanks to all for your suggestions. The Nappy Lady was great too so if anyone has nappy queries or needs to buy some nappies, do try her.

Great news Gem13! Agree about the Nappy Lady they offer a very good service.

Freddiecat · 05/11/2003 12:51

Also agree about the Nappy Lady.

Slight hijacking of thread but prompted by comments within it.

We initially bought Motherease one size (they lie!) which DS grew out of at 10 months.

We then bought 17 TotsBots size 2's and I am hoping fingers crossed that these will last him another 18 months until he's out of nappies.

Am I being a bit over optimistic? He is 18 months now. The cost is more irritating than anything. We have another baby on the way so having two in nappies will be fine as they will have their own supply. Also the nappies are in such brilliant condition that we'd have no probs selling second hand.

Tissy · 05/11/2003 13:03

Freddiecat, Tots now come in a size 3 as well, so I suspect that answers your question, unless your ds is thin he may grow out of them. I think they made the extra size to cope not just with fit, but volumes of wee as well.

Don't worry though, you will have no problems selling them on- second hand ones in good condition are snapped up at £5-6 each on the UKP nappy B+s board

Gem13 · 06/11/2003 11:05

Freddiecat - I initially had the Motherease nappies which were actually Popolino and made in Poland (not Canada as the brochure claimed).

At 6 months DS looked like he wasn't going to last much longer in them so I contacted Trading Standards as they claim to be 'one size' lasting until potty training. TS said I could pursue a claim against the shop where I bought them (which I didn't want to do as they have been really helpful) or go through my Credit Card for compensation.

I also contacted Motherease in Canada and in the end the UK distributor changed them for the larger (and better quality) ones.

I do like the look of Tots Bots. The one Size 2 I bought for this problem seems tight on DS (15 months) though and DH wants us to be green (economical!) and use the same Motherease on the bump.

Gem13 - I also thought about trading standards but the nappy lady was v helpful too and to be fair they did say at the outset that if buying nappies before the baby is born then they can't always recommend the best nappy. I think if we'd have bought them after DS was born (9lb 2oz) then they would not have recommended MEOS.

We will use the MEOS on the new baby as I think they are superb nappies and really wish they made a better size. The TB's are lovely but it's a race to get the wrap on over the nappy as DS undoes the velcro. Another reason to use cloth tho as DS undoes disposables even quicker!

bluebear · 06/11/2003 22:07

Freddiecat - I got a trial tots bots size 2 this week, it fits my 2 week old babe, and also my 2 year 4 month old boy (75th centile) with no problems so hopefully yours should last your ds.
