I have been crying in Waitrose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had been being very organised and ordered a free-range turkey from waitrose about 2 weeks ago, to be collected today. This is a big deal for me as I live with vegetarians and don't normally get to cook one at Christmas but dp's mum and her dp are coming so I reckoned it was worth cooking one.
I went with dp to collect it at 2.30 and they had none left . They said that they diddn't hold any past 12.30 ffs. On my original order reciept it says it would be ready to be collected on the morning of the 24th, I took this to be from the morning, ie until they closed. I was wrong. Okay, so I was wrong but the youth in the fetching green jacket who informed me of these sad circumstances diddn't even pretend to give a toss. I know it was Christmas eve but he was really rude.
I diddn't bother causing a fuss and got a frozen duck from the freezer dept. However I broke down at the checkout, much to dp's alarm. I just couldn't stop crying.
I am in the middle of having a really crap cold, and have been working really hard at making a fab Christmas so I'm putting it down to that. Anyway I will be writing to Waitrose as nowhere on the reciept did it say they would not keep it past a certain time and I feel it was misleading. I want them to change the wording to prevent ruining someone elses Christmas, but I won't be using them again

Oh, poor you. Still, you have a duck, which could be even nicer than a turkey. Complain to Waitrose as they should have specified the times, but don't let it ruin your Xmas. Xmas will be fab no matter what you eat.

FairyTaleinNewYork · 24/12/2005 17:41

ask for a hamper as compensation

morningpaper · 24/12/2005 17:43

Sainsbury's shut at 6 and they have AISLES of turkeys for 5 quid

HaveYourselfaMerryMrsBadger · 24/12/2005 17:49

Definitely write a strong letter - JL messed up our wedding list and a sob-story letter elicited a case of very nice wine

Very well done for going and getting a duck like a grownup and not throwing yourself face down on the floor wailing (which would have been my first course of action)

Sleighmenere · 24/12/2005 17:50

You are absolutely right and it certainly won't ruin my Christmas and I do really like duck. But it did make me cry so I will be writing to them and yes, a hamper would be nice but I'm not too sure they will be bothered about losing my business as it amounts to about 50 quid a month, Waitrose is far too expensive for me normally.

i get tearful too if I am tired and something crap happens (plus being a bit of a perfectionist.) most of the youf of today will have no idea how important this bird would be to anyone but that is no reason for waitrose to employ people with rubbish customer service. this is what happens when we pay peanuts.

Sleighmenere · 24/12/2005 17:51

No MrsB I did wail but quietly and into dps shoulder

I would have cried too

and probably had a fist fight with the guy in the green jacket

sympathies

ShortAndStripySolsticer · 24/12/2005 19:49

Sleighmenere, a little like the other MrsBadger lady, I would most probably have had a tantrum. My first thought on reading your post was "I wish I'd have thought to get duck!" it is much nicer .

The wording on the receipt really should include the cut off time, ridiculous that it doesn't! I wonder if they had just run out and were bluffing? Grrr at the nonchalant green person, I hope santa sticks coal in his stocking

tigermoth · 24/12/2005 19:56

I bet that green check out boy has never had to cook his own christmas dinner.

Definitely complain - there should be a clearly stated cut off time somewhere on the receipt.

funnygirl · 24/12/2005 20:00

That is awful. Bah Humbug to Waitrose. I would write and stress the stress factor and see what you get. Def due a hamper or vouchers I would say.

Duck will be much nicer though and at least you have something.

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 24/12/2005 20:07

Hope you have a lovely Christmas lunch with your duck.

That is really rubbish of Waitrose - they should have been clearer on the receipt and they should have informed you verbally when you ordered it. This seems inevitable. And even if you were late I can't believe they sold your turkey to someone else. Who would order one and not collect it? Grrr.

sestius · 24/12/2005 20:16

And in ten years time when GreenJacketYoof has six kids and his in-laws coming round and his wife is in bed with flu and he goes to pick up the turkey and it's not there - THEN he'll remember you and be full of contrition ha ha
