Then all the fans of text language could congregate in one place

OP posts:
PennyLess · 23/12/2005 21:35

Yeah!

Except I'm not sure that they know the difference, do they?

So would they actually be able to identify themsleves as textspeakers?

Many they could give some lessons. It takes me about 3 days to text one line.

WigWamBam · 23/12/2005 21:36

Oh, yes please ... can't stand txt spk

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 23/12/2005 21:37

Threads could include:

'help, can NE1 hlp me with the txtspk 4 'curmudgeon'

OP posts:
ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 23/12/2005 21:38

'Just got my first 1 character text- yay!'

OP posts:
moondog · 23/12/2005 21:38

I wouldn't even know how to send or receive a text, but I recognise it when I see it and think it is so neanderthal.

WigWamBam · 23/12/2005 21:38

There was someone posting in text speak the other day and using "d" instead of "the" ... could barely read a word of it.

galaxy · 23/12/2005 21:39

Takes me longer to work out "text speak" than it does just to type the whole word. My FIL who is 73 sent me a textspeak text this week and took me ages to work it out

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 23/12/2005 21:39

'should we ostracise normal ppl for writing in longhand'

OP posts:
PennyLess · 23/12/2005 21:40

Oh it's quite handy sometimes. I don't do it often but if you are on a journey and delayed or something then it's much cheaper than the phone call and you know it's not going to happen at a difficult time - a bit like an e-mail you know they'll read it when they can.

moondog · 23/12/2005 21:40

What a groover galaxy!

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 23/12/2005 21:41

I send texts sometimes but i type it all out properly. What's the point of predictive text messaging if you don't use proper words anyway?

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 23/12/2005 21:43

I type it all out properly too, with punctuation and intial capitals ... don't use predictive text though, it doesn't predict well enough for my liking!

tamba · 23/12/2005 21:49

I hate text speak... I wont even do it in texts! I write it all out and it gets really long. I can understand it though if someone texts me in txt spk.

My spelling is terrible though but you will just have to put up with that!

sobernoel · 23/12/2005 21:53

I think we all just have to get with the programme and accept text speak. It's only another version of net speak (wtf, btw, rofl and all that) - so unless we want to alienate all people under 26 we have to embrace it, imvho.

WigWamBam · 23/12/2005 21:54

I might have to accept it, as it's so prevalent these days, but I don't have to embrace it.

PennyLess · 23/12/2005 21:56

No, I disagree. On our keyboards we have a key for eveyr letter, and 10 fingers to cope with that, whether we use them or not. There is no need not to write properly.
Text speak for writing text messages makes sense (though I do not see it as essential) because we use two thumbs and ten keys for an awful lot of characters.

snowfalls · 23/12/2005 21:56

r u ppl mad, whats rong wit txt spk

DanceOfThePeachyPlumFairy · 23/12/2005 22:06

As long as we can understand it there's not an issue, surely?

Is this a snipe at the other thread? If not then it still looks like it! I'd feel awful if I were her... Christmas spirit anybody?

tamba · 23/12/2005 22:08

I never thought about ROFL and PMSL etc as net speak! wow I can type in 4 different 'languags'..

English
Text speak
Net speak
Typonese

I am talented

WigWamBam · 23/12/2005 22:08

I don't think this is a snipe ...

And half the time I can't understand text speak, or I have to concentrate three times as hard to be able to understand it, and when you get to my advanced age that's not easy!

Apart from anything else, I do tend not to bother reading the really text speaky ones because I find them so hard to understand - and as I'm probably not the only one, some posters might find that they're a bit short on replies to their threads.

tamba · 23/12/2005 22:10

Pixiefish · 23/12/2005 22:16

You'd be chocked at how many kids answer GCSE exam papers in text. I mark the English paper for our exam board and se loads of them. Needless to say they score badly

ThereWASaGiraffeInTheNativity · 23/12/2005 22:16

hahahahahhaa.

My particular favourite is 'aliwanisu-all I want is you'
