Do you think kids remember being in the womb?

Dd (3) told me today she liked it when she was in my tummy. (She often brings up subjects apparently at random!). I asked her why, and she said "it was nice and warm". Not a difficult thing to guess I suppose, but then I asked if it was quiet or noisy, and she said, "quiet, but i could hear when you went upstairs"- our stairs are wood and rather noisy. I asked what else she remembered, and she said, "sometimes I shivered"- funnily enough I do remember eating a lot of ice-cream as it was the only thing that didn't either make me sick or bring on my reflux, and she used to squirm when the first mouthful hit my stomach.

Has anyone else's child had memeories, or do you think this was an over-active imagination?

i think it's probably an over-active imagination.

NotQuiteCockney · 20/12/2005 21:06

Over-active imagination, but very sweet.

FYI, the womb is pretty noisy. You can hear the mom's heart swooshing, the digestive tract gurgling, and voices, particularly the mom's voice.

Has she ever heard (or overheard) you talking about when you were pregnant? Maybe you've told her that before she was born she was in a dark, quiet place, or maybe she's heard you talk about her shivering?

Well my DS1 remembers being the womb too ...

... only he says he met his brother whilst in there, his brother is 3 1/2 years younger, says they were great friends. LOL!

followthestarlover · 20/12/2005 21:10

was going to say that too wwb!

Yes, my ds says it was dark and cosy "when I was inside you Mummy" too. However he also says he used to live in the park and eat bananas.

Reindior · 20/12/2005 21:10

Mine certainly doesn't. Doesn't stop him wanting to know all the whys and wherefores though!

DD1 (3) has talked about being in my womb for the last year or so. She says it was warm, cosy and dark. I don't know how much is memory but given that she remembers her 1st set of vacs in detail, I can almost believe it.

Imagination does play a part though. She has, over time, added detail to the story of when she was 'inside' mummy. She was in there with DD2 (1) apparently, there was a cupboard which they couldn't see in, because there was no light . When she tells me the cat was there too, I might start to worry!

We were in the car one day and she piped up (out of nowhere) "Mummy, why did you cry when I had my injection? I was alright, you know. It didn't hurt much. It was sad that you cried, then I cried."

Meant to add, I cried when she had her first set of jabs, none of the others and she hasn't had her preschool ones yet.

I took DS to a child psychologist (behaviour issues!) and she told me that sometimes DS is jealous of others getting attention from me and often wants to get back in the womb as it felt a safe place to him. I didn't believe a word she said about it though.

My friends younger brother told us he remembers being in the womb and he didn't want to come out as he was playing the playstation!

BudaBabeInAManger · 20/12/2005 22:08

A friend's DS at age 4 watched a TV programme where a woman was giving birth. So he asked......

"What did I eat when I was in your tummy?"

"You ate what Mummy ate"

"oh" (disappointed) "you mean there wasn't a MacDonalds in there"!!!!

tuppenceworth · 20/12/2005 22:16

Do you remember being in the womb??

merryTissmas · 21/12/2005 08:36

well, no, I don't remember being in the womb, but a lot else has happened over the last 42 years. I do have some memories of early childhood, though, so why couldn't a child remember a little further back?

I suppose it's a difficult thing to measure/ record, but who's to say when "memory" starts? Newborn babies recognise their mother's face very quickly, and it is said that sounds heard in the womb (Mum's heartbeat etc) can be calming to a baby, so there must be an element of recall involved.

I was just intrigued by my dd saying she "shivered|". Why would she shiver if it was nice and warm in there- it just fitted in with the ice-cream thing!

(impressively) over active imagination - definitely!

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2005 08:50

I think it's an over-active imagination but it's lovely

I'm not saying that they don't remember as such but I don't think the memories would be quite so precise as the baby's brain would be so underdeveloped. I also think such memories would fade quite quickly. eg most of my childhood momories have faded to snapshots.
