A lot of shops don't have the space to store stuff unfortunately.

what idiots

brusselsbeansprout · 19/12/2005 18:13

It's really hard for charity shops at the moment. The flood of cheap clothes shops on the high street has affected their profit margins in a big way and they have to be careful about what they put out on the shop floor, ie ensure it is stuff that will sell. I'm sure they appreciated you making the effort though.

melrose · 19/12/2005 18:16

Did they look at what you had? I work for one of the main charity retailers and we do have to be choosy about what we sell, as we need to maintain a level of quality. If you wouldn't consider buying it chances are we won't sell it. However it does sound as though the volunteers in the shop you went to were very rude!

I understand Yorkiegirl, my Mum does some voluntary work ... not for the RSPCA though As Beansprout has already explained they have to be very careful what they put out i.e. that it will definately sell and, in the meantime, most have very little storage space. Some don't even stock childrens clothes now as they make so little on them - it's not that they're being ungrateful - but the staff generally have quite a lot of pressure on them to make money hence the reason that loads of charitys are now selling more and more new goods in their shops fairtrade stuff etc. Still annoying though when someones taken the time and trouble - if the toys and books are in good nick, have you thought about a childrens charity? like the Candlelighters (childrens cancer ward at Jimmys)?

mazzystar · 19/12/2005 18:33

our oxfam is like that, really ridiculously snooty

so instead, i have just taken a whole lot of nice new toys and clothes and stuff to a mother and baby group run by Refugee Action.

they were SO pleased

mazzystar · 19/12/2005 18:37

also our local sainsbury's is asking people for presents for kids in local children's homes, yours might be too?

merrycompo · 19/12/2005 18:39

I wait for the bags to drop through the letter box cos then at least I know they want stuff - and I don't have to carry it

twirlingaroundthechristmastree · 19/12/2005 18:40

maybe the volunteers are acting out of line with the manager's instructions?

Errm I went to a charity shop the other day as was after baby girls clothes for a mate. There were loads hanging up just through a door and I went to look, not go through and this woman ran out and pulled down the bead curtain (not exactly hiding them). I asked if she had any and she virtually told me to get out of the shop. I suppose she wanted them for herself. I was a bit annoyed really.
