Now I know this will cause a hoo-haa but I just want some advice. Dd1 had her ears pierced on Saturday by the same place I had my facial piercing, anyway, the piercing itself is fine, but she has a reaction come up around the earlobe, I thought that it was the solution they gave me to clean the lobes with, so used salt water yesterday but its worse today, have given priton which has helped, just spoke to the piercing shop and they said they used Surcial Steel and I can't see it being a reaction to that. What is it??

BTW she wanted it done, I didn't force her.

(fwiw I can't have surgical steel in my ears - odd cos tounge bar/belly bar's fine) I can only have gold nothing else - might be that? I had a reaction when my ears we're first done needed a trip to the drs to anti botics sergical spirit and 9ct gold earrings. dr told me to take them out and leave it out but I managed to leave the gold ones in. hth.

When I had my belly button pierced I was told that surgical steel was the safest thing to do it with - apparantly it's what they use to "pin and plate" people who have bad road accidents and I too was told I wouldn't have a reaction to it. I asked the question because I'm allergic to most metals. I've been fine - had to bathe the piercing in salt water for well over a year - but I've had no problems

Try to bathe it 3 times a day in salt water - have the water as hot as your dd can stand it, the hotter the better I was told

actually! thinking about it I had a reaction similar to hers, when I had the top of my ear pierced.

What sort of reaction do you mean?

Tea tree oil may help if the salt water doesn't

sparklymieow · 19/12/2005 14:03

its a spotty red rash just around the back of the ear and the front

we used white spirit when we had ears pierced back in the 80's
ask the chemist?

MerlinsBeard · 19/12/2005 14:07

when i had my piercings(inc ears) i just used savlon spray, never the stuff they mix up as i don't trist them. i sprayed mine with savlon spray and turned the studs round at least twice a day for the first few months(my ears heal quickley, this is the 3rd time they have been peirced due to healing!)

How about hydrogen peroxide? Ask the chemist for 6% 20vols. That's what I used when I had my belly button done.

If it's a rash as opposed the more usual (?)swollen/itchy type reaction I think i'd have a word with the pharmacist if I were you

HaveYourselfaMerryMrsBadger · 19/12/2005 15:52

Epiffany, that was SURGICAL spirit, not WHITE spirit!
Unless you cleaned paintbrushes with your ears...

Kelly1978 · 19/12/2005 15:55

lo @ epiffany.

I'd check with the pharmacist too.

sparklymieow · 19/12/2005 16:06

been to the piercing shop and they think itsa reaction to the gloves they used, I forgot she is allergic to plasters and that
