Expecting my first baby next year and am feeling bad because I've spent so much money on baby clothes. I think I've really got carried away and bought far too many outfits.

Too many. Ds lived in sleepsuits for the first three months. Take lots of sleep suits/bodysuits to hospital though. My ds weed everywhere almost every time I changed his nappy and I had to start borrowing clothes from the hospital as I ran out very quickly!

I went mad! I bought really expensive stuff too - short sleeved vests from the Dispensery at £19 each, £35 on a pair of jeans etc etc - all bought while I was still pregnant - her wardrobe was full and I didn't even know what sex my baby was going to be! Ridiculous - but I have never been so excited about anything before and so what....it gave me pleasure. She wore it all, we were out with her loads and she wore sleepsuits to 'go to bed' in and outfits during the day mostly. I've passed them onto friends new babies and saved stuff for when I have other children etc. I wouldn't spend money like that now - only on a few key items, the rest is all reasonably priced stuff / cheap. I did go over the top but so what aye, it was how I wanted to spend my money.

Well at least I never bought anything expensive; all the clothes were from cheap or second hand shops and I dont need to worry about being given even more clothes, we dont have much contact with anybody except 2 of dps relatives and they have bought us a pram and bedding instead

One thing I never realised before i had ds1 was how quickly babies grow out of things. I used to save really good stuff for "best". And then when I went to put him in it it would be too small.

Bozza · 30/10/2003 10:31

I bought:
6 sleepsuits (3 newborn and 3 0-3)
6 bodysuits (3 of each also)
2 prs scratch mittens
2 pairs socks
One furry all-in-one suit (0-3) - it was Feb
Had been given some knitted cardigans, bonnets and bootees

DS was 9lb 10oz and the 0-3 stuff drowned him at first so am surprised by what others say about the newborn stuff being too small. But I think a lot of the weight was his head. DH went out and bought him 2 3-6 months hats in the first week dn we were given some small sleepsuits which was very useful and the clothes soon poured in. Honestly did not buy any outfits.

I bought loads and loads of stuff for DD, I still find it difficult not to buy for her now and shes coming up for 15 months old. I think we had around 10-15 sleepsuits (all got worn and are in good enough condition for use with next baby), 10 vests, 8-10 towelling bibs, 0 socks (she was born in August and would be wearing sleepsuits pretty much 24/7 anyway). I think we had around 8-10 day outfits which didn't really get worn as she looked so comfy in sleepsuits that I was loathe to start loading the fussy day stuff onto her.

Too many! I got caught out as DD1 was big so all the little vests etc I'd washed didnt fit! Mind you these were from Babies R US and were much smaller than equivalents from Mothercare etc. Vests and sleepsuits were the main things we used at first. Anything that needed ironing did not get worn very much, but you may be more organised or have help on that front. I had, but never used scratch mits, hats etc. The best thing I had was a fleece all in one suit in a cute but not too cute animal print which was light enough for the car and for autumn/spring weather when she was big enough to pull socks off.

Shopping and dressing them is one of the fun bits so enjoy it. Bith DDs were better turned out than ne moat of the time!

Not sure what to do with it all now, other than local charity shop. Does anyone collect specifically for babies? I have lots of equipment which they wont take (bath, cot etc). It seems a pity to dump it and it is probably a bit too used to sell.

CathB - have you tried Ebay? As long as you say the things are a bit worn, you'd be surprised at what you can sell!

marialuisa · 30/10/2003 13:36

CathB, see if you have a Crisis Pregnancy centre near you. They are always grateful for baby and kids stuff as well as maternity gear and equipment.

Despite Ds having huge head (hence the 3-6m hats at 5 days old and I was trying him age 5 hats on in Asda this week even tho he is only 2) I found the hood on the all-in-one suit really gaped and didn't protect his ears at all. So he needed a hat really.

lol Bozza! ds is just under five years old and we found that the adult winter hats fit him nicely whilst the childrens ones just slide up and sort of sit on top of his head!
