Hi guddy, I'm not Indian but ex Dh is so our ds is half Indian and is going to MILs tonight for diwali tomorrow. He knows he'll come back with a fist full of cash so he's excited about that I must buy a card this afternoon to send with him.

Diwali is a hindu festival weloming Ram and Sita (mythological )out of the forest and celebrating hindu new year.Deepavali is the sanskrit word meaning a row of lights now shortened to diwali.

some people light decorate candles, some decorate clay lamps.
It is a huge family festival starting with worship followed by celebration breakfast.Families dress in new clothes and jewels and go visiting each other. They exchange gifts and sweets. At night every house is lit up in the hope that lakshmi, goddess of wealth will bless them.
If you hear fireworks this weekend it well may be of diwali.
Diwali lasts 5 days starting today.

Happy, happy Diwali. It is this time of year that we teach about Diwali at school, but as I am on ML I miss it. I look forward to teaching DD all about this and other festivals as she gets older. Have a great time everyone.

Tinker · 24/10/2003 18:59

Happy Diwali too. My daugher made a little lamp (a diva lamp?) last year which still takes pride of place in my dining room

Frenchgirl · 24/10/2003 19:23

Happy Diwali! one of the girls I teach wore a beautiful pink outfit today (sorry, sure it has a name but i don't know it...), she said she loves diwali as it's so much fun for the children, all the other kids in the class were fascinated and quite jealous of her!!

mammya · 24/10/2003 21:28

Happy diwali everyone!

suedonim · 24/10/2003 21:34

Happy diwali, Guddy and all. I must admit I'm now a bit confused about it being Hindu NY, as we were in Bali in April and it was also Hindu NY then! However, they mark it by burning effigies of monsters the previous evening and then on the actual day keep very quiet, staying indoors, no fires, lights, tv etc, so that the evil gods will think no one inhabits Bali and this pass on to somewhere else, leaving the Balinese in peace. I know the Balinese version of Hindism is different to that elsewhere butI wonder how two different NY's arose?

jinna · 25/10/2003 18:06

A Diwali baby: Brilliant, and congratulations.

Happy Diwali. DP is Hindu, we went to Tooting for lunch, (Kastoori, really fabulous vegetarian food,) and then soaked up the atmosphere, buying divas and various Indian sweets. Next year we'll take DS to one of the big processions / firework displays.
