Weird one. Kids moving up the beach when playing at the shore.

Not sure which topic this one is for.
Yesterday we went to the beach and the kids stood at the shore throwing stones (and feeding penguins Hmm), but they kept sort of drifting up the beach away from where we were sitting.
We would call them back and they would play a bit more then the same thing would happen always in the same direction.

Then i remembered the same thing happening when i was little. I'd play at the beach, get totally engrossed and when i looked up to see my parents, i'd have moved down the beach. And DH agreed this happened to him.

Is there an explanation for this?

DS was really obsessed with penguins and acquired quite a few .....

Long shore drift

The beach we frequented as children had the alphabet painted along the sea wall so you knew your mum was in front of 'S' and where to head after you had drifted sown to 'W'

we've just moved back to the area and it's so lovely.

i got stuck on the beach there when heavily pregnant once upon a time. the beach sort of shelves sometimes, and the stones moved under me when i stepped on them. eventually crawled up the shelf on hands and knees.

that is a lot of penguins!

so what you're saying is that the children shouldn't get told off for it?

is it because of the direction of the waves on the shore?

I used to ride on the beach and the horses would always stagger about a bit in the shallows because if they looked at the waves, which were travelling at an angle to the beach, they would get disorientated.

What an odd question!

RoundOrangeHead · 25/09/2011 09:52

Slapton Sands also good for feeding imaginary penguins

They also have mad ducks that you can feed for real

TashHag · 25/09/2011 10:00

There used to be white ducks at South Pool -I haven't been there for ages either, I wonder if there are any there now?

nevergoogle · 25/09/2011 10:03

i told you it was a weird one.

I adore that beach!

nevergoogle · 25/09/2011 11:34

i'll be determined that i don't drift on the beach from now on. it's too weird.

i shall defy long shore drift and tie the children to me also.

and the penguins.

I'd never thought about this before but you are right - thinking back to this summer when I was watching ds and his cousins paddling and playing on the shore.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 25/09/2011 11:49

ooooh I'll bet it's to do with the coriolis effect

rockinastocking · 25/09/2011 11:54

Happens to me to.

But I drift left to right.

I got all excited about the penguins for a minute. Thought you must have been at Bridlington.

I know if I go surfing at night I'll drift a long way down the shore without realising it, nearly a mile once. Though thats to do with tides I suppose but its odd that you don't feel you've gone sideways.

nevergoogle · 25/09/2011 19:58

talking of imaginary, Dh and i spent our imaginary money on lunch at the venus cafe on the beach. yum but yikes.

i was on that beach this summer, it was lovely. i agree, i thought the sandpit was really odd when we first got on the beach as i didn't realise it was pebbly!
