We keep our rabbit outside all the time. She is in a breeding pen which is a bit like a shed and has a wooden door you shut at night to stop the foxes eating her.

I know loads of people who keep their rabbits in the house. One of my friends rasbbits used to use a cat flap to get in and out the house to the garden. It never ran off and always used to come in the house to sleep!

I personally would think it would be warm enough in the garage. As long as you put plenty of bedding in rabbits are usually fine.

mears · 23/10/2003 15:52

I was worried about leaving our rabbits outside in the winter but they were absolutely fine. They are built to live outside and as long as he has plenty of straw he will be able to keep himself warm. We did have a problem with the waterbottle freezing sometimes. We have an enclosure (built by DH) attached to the hutch so the rabbits could hop in and out safely with the hutch door left open. Well we DID. Tango got swiped one night months ago, probably by a fox. We used to let them run about freely in the garden and I couldn't catch her to put her in one night. Her sister got put down 2 days ago because she had a large tumour growing out the muscle of one of her back legs.

Sorry - re-read that. He will be fine in the garage. Our rabbits were outside all year.

mears · 23/10/2003 15:54

I think DH and I were more upset than the kids. She was about 8 years old so she was getting old.

our bunny lives on our balcony all year round.we cover the hutch at night with a blanket and plastic sheet (loose enough that she can breathe) and if its rainy then we can make the plastic sheet into a tent so she can see out but keep dry or shield her from the wind etc.she always has plenty of hay.
we do bring her in on the night of the council firework display as it is held in the park directly behind our apartments and also on bonfire night.
in the summer she has free rein of the balcony and apartment (when the doors open)and in the winter if its a warmish day shell come out for a run either on the balcony or in the apartment...obviously we've netted the balcony to stop her escaping.

Twinkie - My rabbit is a house rabbit. He's never been outside, in fact, if we leave the back door open he point blank refuses to go out!

It just depends what he's used to. I would say they would get more bored outside! At least in the house there is the general bustle of people.

I'm a big softie.... and after his paralysis... I'd bring him indoors.

However, all the other rabbits I've had have been outdoors and a few never liked the house even just for a run about.

Can anyone remember the OTHER rabbit thread from a while back? These devices came up in conversation the other day and I wanted to provide a friend with some info. It's not for me you understand

WideWebWitch · 27/10/2003 08:00
