What lullabies do you sing to your children?

Just wondered last night as I was warbling away what other people sing to their little darlings? As it's nearly Christmas, I'll soon be into carols (O Little Town of Bethlehem is a good long one for a particularly fretful child) but usually my repertoire contains such favourites as 'Moon River' 'Summertime' 'The Way You Look Tonight' (not sure who by but Fred Astair sings it!) 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' and a couple from Mary Poppins ... Oh, and 'Paper Doll' - that dates from about 1925.
Am I strange? Is everyone else just tucking them in with a quick burst of Hushabye Baby? Please tell me I'm not alone!

ks: (suspect bits of this are wrong but the thought is there - sniff)

Say goodbye my own true lover
As we sing our lovers' song
How it breaks my heart to leave you
Now the carnival is gone

High above the dawn is breaking
And your tears are falling rain
Now the carnival is over
We may never meet again

Like a drum my heart was beating
And your kiss was sweet as wine
But the joys of love are fleeting
For Pierrot and Columbine

Now the harbour light is calling
This must be our last goodbye
Though the carnival is over
I will love you till I die.

(I'll get me coat.)

i sing him the coventry carol plus our "family" lullaby, "mummy has a little boy...." which of course has been added this generation as mummy has had a little girl...

ps - the coventry carol really is the best one - i can't think of anything else which has had the entire family blubbing away...

Sob, sob! Can't watch that part of Dumbo without crying, much to my 10-year old's amusement! Looove most things by The Seekers so thanks for the words. My children like Me & My Teddy Bear by Rosemary Cloony (v. old song) and

'Go to sleep my baby
Go to sleepy byes
Gp to sleep my baby
Close your tired eyes'

but I may have made this one up at 3 o' clock one desperate morning!

Thank you frieda. I never did know all the words to that, but it used to be played when I was little. Lovely

I remember holding ds1 in the hospital a few hours after he was born and thinking " what am I supposed to sing?" and suddenly remembering Daisy Daisy which I remember my dad and grandparents singing to me. I still sing it to ds2 if he needs comforting. It always brings tears to my eyes!

Thanks so much for the words to 'morning town'. I can't wait for a chance to sing it to dd. (should I be getting myself a life or what?? )
When dd was born the first song I ever sang her was (while in the middle of the 'baby blues' and crying like a baby myself!) 'hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world? And if you did was she crying?' Hope you know the one I mean. I don't know the rest of that song, but could never have finished it without sobbing on the floor anyway!
That still gets me a bit teary.

I sing Twinkle Twinkle to dd as my mum bought us a Winnie the Pooh story book that plays the tune. BTW did you kow there is a second verse to it. It is:

When the blazing sun is gone
When he nothing shines upon
Then you show your little light
Twinkle Twinkle all the night
Twinkle Twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are.

I found this version, there is also a scottish version if you want it. Gosh it bought back memories of singing it at Brownies too!

FOOTBALL CRAZY

  1. I have a favourite brother And his Christian name is Paul. He's lately joined a football club For he's mad about football. He's two black eyes already And teeth lost from his gob, Since Paul became a member of That terrible football club.

CHORUS: For he's football crazy. he's football mad.
The football it has taken away
The little bit o' sense he had.
And it would take a dozen servants
To wash his clothes and scrub
Since Paul became a member of that
Terrible football club.

  1. In the middle of the field one afternoon
    The captain says, 'Now Paul,
Would you kindly take this place-kick
    Since you're mad about football?
So he took forty paces backwards,
    Shot off from the mark.
The ball went sailing over the bar
    And landed in New Yark.

  2. His wife she says she'll leave him
    If Paulie doesn't keep
    Away from football kicking
    At night-time in his sleep.
    He calls out 'Pass, McGinty!'
    And other things so droll
Last night he kicked her out of bed
And swore it was a goal!

I think the Coventry Carol is beautiful. I once heard it sung in Coventry Cathedral and it was lovely. I think it's far too sad for a lullaby though (sorry). I sing "Summertime". Although even that's got it's sad bit - "One of these days, you're going to rise up singing, spread your wings and fly away" (or something like that). Well, not really sad, but YKWIM.
