need to buy a little prezie for sil's boyfriend's parents who have come over to the uk for christmas and will be bringing little prezies for everyone. don't know what they are like at all so will have to be something nuetral. was wondering if there was any foodie thing you miss while you are away (they will be here for a month) or something that will remind you of nz for christmas?

I am
and true to my adoptive country's culture I am making a joke at the kiwi's expense

There is a belief that all kiwis choose one vowel sound to serve for all vowels in the English Language, hence you can easily distinguish between and Aussie and a Kiwi by asking them to say "fish and chips' and if it has no "i" sound in it then they are, in truth, a kiwi

Dh is a kiwi and I think he would say -

buy a case of NZ white wine!

Milo, vegemite (can get these in Sainsbury's)

Enideepmidwinter · 14/12/2005 15:56

bloody nice NZ pinot noir

my kiwi friends miss it A LOT

sevensuzyswongsaswimming · 14/12/2005 15:56

and which vowel sound does he use Mercy?

Enideepmidwinter · 14/12/2005 15:59

oi suze cat me I have nearly finished it

Mercy · 14/12/2005 16:26

Dh says fish and chips but he's been here a while now; tbh he never had a particularly strong accent anyway.

But his family and friends bakc home deff pronounce it fush and chups!

csa · 14/12/2005 17:29

you guys make me laugh. i will have to find a conversation over christmas where they have to talk about fush and chups

On a completely different note, not sure how small a gift you want to get but what about a 'UK' book of some sort, there are some neat English photography books, or something from the area which they will be staying that they can take home to remind them of the trip. I assume they won't be staying too long so probably won't really miss things from home too much.

csa · 15/12/2005 08:03

ooo.. i like the photography book idea. anyone can think of anything good for the bournmouth or surrey or even cambridge area? only prob is don't know how expensive they are. guess i can always get a nice picture of kings college cos everyone always associate cambridge with kings college (we live in cambridge)

great idea thanks Chuffingoodtime

any others?

Good idea chuffingoodtime, that's exactly what we did for dh's parents. Might be a bit naff but what about a good quality calendar with photos of local views/landmarks? Will be light to take home, too.

Sevensuzyswongs; how do aussies pronounce canapes?

csa · 15/12/2005 20:25

i did think about a calendar too. hmm.... guess i'll just have to see what's in the shops.

OP posts:
OhlittletownofEIDSVOLD · 15/12/2005 20:32

we pronounce it canapays

OhlittletownofEIDSVOLD · 15/12/2005 20:34

Calendar would be a good idea... I send aussie calendars to in laws - have sent themes they like - eg pil are made gardeners so have sent one featuring aussie wild flowers, have also sent them one of our city.....

What about a little watercolour print of Cambridge. I bought a few like that of places dh and I visited and we will frame them and put them up in our study/family room.... to remind us of great places we visited.

csa · 15/12/2005 20:38

i think if i can find a nice watercolour print, i'll probably get that as it may have a longer life than a calendar. was thinking of getting an envelope stamped for them so they could just post it home as i think they are off to europe for a bit of travelling before they head back. what dio you think? too much?

GingerBearingGifts · 15/12/2005 20:41

Suzy, I thought it was pin and pen that sounded the same in kiwispeak??

Mercy · 15/12/2005 21:14

kiwis say 'can apes' for canapes (or at least the ones I know do). I've heard aussies say it too!

Years ago I remember dh telling me about a beer garden down he'd discovered on the south bank.

When we eventually went there, it turned out to be the bear garden right by the Globe theatre.

csa sounds like a good idea to me. H

OhlittletownofEIDSVOLD · 16/12/2005 02:38

that is fab - calendar and a nice print of somewhere they may visit to be sent home for safe keeping....

very good idea
