fancy dress costume ideas for heavily pregnant lady??

Ha, it's not often I call myself a lady!
I've been invited to a fancy dress ball next week. I'd dearly like to go, but I can't think of anything that I could dress up as on a budget. I'm not willing to spend much money on an outfit that will never go near me again and I don't have many clothes that fit me that I can modify. That doesn't leave a lot to work with does it?
Does anyone have any clever ideas? DP suggested going as a nun (my rounded stomach would look great in a habit I'm sure!), but putting together that outfit even seems beyond me. I think my brain (brian) is starting to shut down in anticipation on the new baby. All ideas gratefully received

paint yourself blue and go as a teletubby?

Girly · 22/10/2003 15:29

What about Mary and Joseph, you could borrow a donkey!

Well how big is your belly? As its near Halloween how about a pumpkin?

(I wanted to do that if the baby had been 2 weeks late, though where I would have gone I don't know!)

make a cone of orange paper and wear it as a beak plus your best black dress and you're a penguin!

sorry, it's just I feel like a teletuby myslef (as Ghosty helpfully suggested yesterday).

I think the nun idea is a good one, but would need a lot of material unless you already have a dark-coloured tent dress.

What preg clothes do you have and maybe we can start from there?

This may be no help at all but it's funny... On my hen do we dressed up as various characters and one of my best friends who was 7 1/2m pg came as one of the ABBA girls, in a lycra catsuit with bell bottoms. It was so tight you could almost see the baby's face!

scream buy a piece of black cloth and make an opening for your head.Buy a mask and a knife, quick cozzy.

oh you are all so flattering - mr blobby indeed!
I was kind of hoping someone could suggest a fantastic sexy easy to assemble outfit (made from two pipecleaners and some sticky tape...) and I get Mr Blobby???

I have: various stretchy tops and a selection of tunics, trousers I have two pairs - one for work (beige) and one for casual (stretchy combat type). I also have a few long black skirts and one knee length black skirt that still fit.
Pretty basic maternity wardrobe.
Pie I like the pumpkin idea - I'm 35 wks so have a lot of stomach to play with. How would you do it? I could wear all tight black clothes I suppose, but how would I do the belly?

doormat - good plan, I could dye an old sheet..

er...You could be very bold and paint it

Alternatively I would suggest an orange swimming costume if you are bold enough, or a large orange scarf.

I guess whether you put a jack-a-lantern face on is another decision!

doormat · 22/10/2003 16:10

or even a wizard (you could dye a sheet and make opening for head and arms)
glue some glitter on to the sheet and find a wand of some sort.Or draw stars, sun and moons with fabric paint.
This would look good if you had longish hair.

doormat · 22/10/2003 16:11

ps wizard hat could be made out of cheap witches hat, just glue some glitter on etc.

CountessDracula · 22/10/2003 16:14

How about going as Mia Farrow in Rosemary's baby if you have short hair, just get some 60's clothes and look mad.

Jemma7 · 22/10/2003 16:33

What is your bump like?

If it's a nice sized bump with no stretchmarks (I know, i know, if it is we will all hunt her down ) you could go as Genie or something - bearing a bit of flesh!

On second thoughts - don't think i would fancy that much in this weather

sprout · 22/10/2003 20:07

I like the pumpkin idea, too - at 37 wks pg myself it's something I can identify with . Couldn't you just put an orange scarf or scrap of material around the bump, and stick to your tight black stuff for the rest? Though, if your bump is anything like mine, it's going to have to be a pretty long scarf...

I must say, when I saw this thread I thought "Oooh ... go as La La!!" ...
I was getting dressed in my normal maternity clothes the other day and DS came in and said, "Oooooh, Mummy, what are you getting dressed up as?" - didn't know whether to laugh or cry!!
I think the pumpkin idea is good ... your black clothes with orange material wrapped around your bump - paint the pumpkin face with fabric paint ... excellent ...
