as we don't want to get a sitter or for one of us to have to drive, we will be at home. Have asked good friends with 2 kids and recently divorced friend with her 2 and possibly friend whose wife died at April. We all get on well but there will be 8 kids and 6 adults. WHAT SHALL I DO TO ENTERTAIN THEM??????????????

Could try some good old fashioned party games like charades, you get guess the inro CDS for something a bit more modern.

Not sure what telly is like elsewhere but in Scotland it is great with lots of comedy and everyone seems happy to relax and watch a few good programmes and chat and drink.

I will as usuall be out working all night and normally bring in the bells battering on a portaloo checking if the occupant is concious so what ever you do if its warm and dry i am sure everyone will enjoy it. .

That was supposed to be guess the into CDS.

The kids will fend for themselves - we often have friends over with kids of different ages and they disappear upstairs and make camps or invent games or play schools and just get on with it.

The adults - I would sit to the table to everyone can be included in the conversation - have a buffet style supper so it's easy on you and everyone can dig in, music in the background, few drinks, the evening will take care of itself.

Have a good time.

Oh games definitely!
Everyone loves them (once they get into it) and it makes an occasion feel special rather than a boozathon (which won't be good for the more emotionally fragile members of your party.)

Charades of course.
Also get everyone to prepare a 'turn' (poem, song, tricks, dance routine). We do this every year.

Get the adults to do kids games and vice versa. In our Sunday school party, the kids judges the adults in a musical statues competition. Was a scream!

Pass the parcel,musical chairs,card games.

I promise you,it will go down a storm.

We ae doing posh dinner party downstars with a 'disco' in DD1's room and a 'cinema' in our room for the kids We have 8 adults and 6 kids too.

Crunchie- is your house v v big????????
I like these ideas .. more please!
English Tv is awful, I think it is designed to make you feel like a saddo for having to switch it on.

Oh God, don't put the tv on!!!
How depressing is that!!!!!

My house isn't v.big, Just a normal house, but basically the adults will be downstairs and the kids upstairs. My DD1 wants a 'disco' in her room as we have a cd player in there. Our bedroom boasts a huge 14" portable TV, so there's the cinema (just make some popcorn and we are done) Other thoughts are a 'pamper room' in DD2's room, with nail varnish, lipglosses etc all laid out. Luckily we have invite people with girls too, who all know each other form school (bar a couple of step kids) so they should play together well. The oldest is nine, teh youngest 4.

Basically anything to entertain the kids while we eat and get totally ratted downstairs
