driving to work... how long is acceptable to you?

DH just been offered a job which will mean driving for about 1hour-1hour&10-15minutes depending on traffic. He says we have to move nearer. I don't want to. So MN, my question is what do you think is acceptable for travelling to work by car?

dh say he will commute no longer than 35 minutes, hes on motorcycle.
although he does travel 200 miles down south and back once a week.

I have a 40 mile commute to work, which takes 45 mins on a clear run, but up to an hour and a half if the traffic is bad. If there is an accident or breakdown, it can take even longer. So, that's 2 - 3 hours of your day.
Someone said it is unproductive time, which is true, but you can't switch off, you have to concentrate on the road, so it's tiring. There is the cost of fuel, the cost of wear and tear on your car, and the stress of other people's bad driving!
In short, having done it for nearly two years now, I am finally going to be moving house in the spring. I can't wait to get ten hours a week of my life back!!!

I wouldnt want to drive for more than about 40 minutes. Depends partly on the route. If its along the M4 in the rush hour, its a plain nightmare and you should definitly move. If its nice and calm, his sanity might last a bit longer.

My commute (3 days a week) is about 35-40 minutes. But one day last week the motorway was closed and it took me 2 hours. So then I had that time to make up. And this morning due to an accident it took an extra 20 mins. Of course, this is the worst time of year. In the summer hols its a breeze.

AUNTYBRANDYBUTTER still amazed is it really 12 midnight?

thanks everyone, now decided to be fair to us all and will be moving asap. Hopefully our children will make really nice friends, if they are happy I've decided it will be good for us as dh will be home more than he is right now even.

yes midnight!! Really bad at this time of year as he works from 9a.m till after 10!!! Its not so bad during the year. how do I cope?!!! It drives me mad. I miss him and he only gets Sundays off!! People always feel sorry for HIM yet the longer he works the longer Iwork..iyswim!!!!!!

PeachyPlumFairy · 13/12/2005 18:42

Auntybrandy, sympathies, was where you are now for a time and it put our marriage under strain (dh was working / commuting 18 hrs in total) it was like being a single Mum without the chance of meeting someone and life getting better, iyswim.

Auntybrandybutter · 14/12/2005 06:21

I know what you mean! It not bad during the year as he often gets days off during the week or only works evenings its just this time of year!!

harpsiheraldangelssing · 14/12/2005 07:40

well I used to do two hours each way (drive then train) for about two and a half years. It was OK, once you got used to it. in a car it would have been better; it was standing on the platform in the cold and rain and wind and snow that finally got to me. Then we moved nearer and it was more like one hour/ one hour ten minutes. Bearable.

DH drives about an hour each way every day. Used to be more like an hour and a quarter. I suppose it is something you put up0 with to live somewhere affordable. there is no way we could afford anywhere auitable for a family in London

throckenholt · 14/12/2005 08:04

my personal limit is half an hour - I used to drive an hour each way - but swore I would never do that again. Evne half an hour annoys me - would prefer max of 20 mins.

tarantula · 14/12/2005 08:25

It takes me an hour each day to get to work (unless the wind si bad). I used to train and tube it which I hated tho it did give me time to catch up on my reading. Now go by bike which is quicker and cheaper and keeps me fit. I wouldnt want to do longer than an hour tho as Id feel it was wasted family time.

Auntybrandybutter · 14/12/2005 09:26

We thought abought moving closer to Dh's work but it would mean children changing school and its not a good time for them to move! Plust they have had enough change in their lives!
