Best quality school trousers and polo shirts....

Maybe this should be under 'Products' but here goes anyway..

I am a novice at school uniform shopping as Ds1 does not start school until January, but I have realised that January is not all that far away and have yet to buy any part of his uniform .

Was hoping Mnetters would tell me where I could buy the best quality trousers and polo shirts, reasonably priced, which can withstand a 4 year old boy's activity levels.

Thanks

Ds1 is 12, in Y8, and still wearing the same second-hand M&S school pants he started Y7 in, despite strenuous muddy football matches most lunchtimes. They are these grey ones , which are pull-on in the smaller sizes. Excellent.

Not sure about polo shirts - I like 100% cotton, which excludes a lot of shops and you can't get them in all colours, but Woolies' were always good.

Also recommend M+S
nothing else comes close trouser wise

Janh · 08/12/2005 13:02

Oh, the crew socks at the bottom of that page are lovely too - really soft but hardwearing.

Curmudgeonlett · 08/12/2005 13:02

DS is quite slim but I am finding the waistband on M&S trousers to be quite tight .. he sometimes finds them difficult to pull up

Enideepmidwinter · 08/12/2005 13:02

i have a girl but I swear by M and S. Better than John Lewis.

(polo shirts for girls are good from Adams though - flower buttons and scalloped collars)

Enideepmidwinter · 08/12/2005 13:03

the little M and S navy pull on short skirt is utterly fab

Janh · 08/12/2005 13:03

Oh, have just discovered that those M&S polos are 100% cotton (had to go to their own page as it doesn't say in the smaller box). There you go then - kit him out at M&S!

We have over the years got most of our stuff from M&S (though we got the polo shirts from school). It is definitely hard wearing good stuff that washes well (and is not overly expensive).

We have some stuff from John Lewis (especially a pinafore for dd) that is nicer quality material and has lasted brilliantly but it does cost a lot more from there.

julienetmum · 08/12/2005 13:16

Don't buy Asda polo shirts, they are cheap but the collars are too small and don't go over the sweatshirts properly.

I have to buy Banner pinafores for dd but I have heard that M & S boys trousers are good.

wewishyouaClaryChristmas · 08/12/2005 13:21

I have been very happy with M and S for trousers, they do 3 styles/fabrics/prices as well so you can find the one which fits best.
Did struggle with DD as she seems to be a skinny shrimp. Her M and S skirt looks nice but is too big round the waist.
Have heard that Tesco?s stuff is very good, certainly good value.
Have been told that Asda trousers wear out very quickly.

Mincepiedermama · 08/12/2005 13:27

M&S.
George ones fall apart.
Ladybird a close second.

I have finally come back to this thread. Thanks for all the replies.

It would seem that M&S wins hands down.

Thanks again

I always go to matalan they are cheap and hardwearing...

I will say it depends on the shape of your child as well

redshoes · 08/12/2005 18:16

Agree George ones fall apart. My ds too chunky for M&S; we prefer BHS for fit and last well too.

WeWhizzzYouAMerryXmas · 08/12/2005 18:24

Yes - I will try M&S next time. Adams trousers look scruffy round the hem after 3 months wear

XmasPud · 08/12/2005 18:29

I thought I had a bargain with my £4.00 trousers for DD - they looked warm, nicely cut blah blah. Went bobbly after a couple of washes and the hems came down not much later. Woolworths stuff has been ok but Marks def the best so far. Will stick to Marks in future as you seem to get value for money for not much more expense.

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 08/12/2005 18:33

M&S. Also Hennes for grey cords and really nice, thick polo shirts (although not always in stock).

stitch · 08/12/2005 19:12

mand s also often does free deliveries on online orders. so for me at least it ends up being cheaper tha n going to the shops
