East Yorks certainly does. Not too sure about the others though.

jamiesam · 07/12/2005 16:07

I thought that there were only three ridings - west took in 'west and south yorkshire' as it were. Suspect any current'east riding council' doesn't nec reflect the old east riding boundary....

None of them do - there are 3 counties (North, West and South) plus Humberside. I think.

But I'm sure they still exist in another dimension, like Middlesex.

There used to be East, West and North Ridings.

Then they did North, West and South Yorkshire and Humberside (which was part Yorkshire, part Lincolnshire). The part of Humberside that was originally in Yorkshire is now known as East Yorkshire.

I think.

someone just gave me their address as East Riding of Yorkshire ...I thought they were making a point but there is an East Riding of Yorkshire council..

Ohhhh, I see, it's one of those Unitary Authorities? E Riding Council

We were given a city population quiz at work the other day and Manchester came about 8th, after places like Bradford and Sheffield - because they only counted the City of Manc population apparently - it's all gone to pot you know.

Janh · 07/12/2005 16:13

It's not a valid address though, is it? Postal boundaries are different again. Berkshire doesn't exist any more for admin but eg Reading is still "Berks".

zippimistletoes · 07/12/2005 16:20

I didn't think it was a proper address but I've put it any way

I suffer from anxiety about this in relation to Northern Ireland addresses to ..always afraid of putting the wrong thing

Oh, so do I, ztt - I have some NI in-laws and they have very odd addresses - no county at all. And we never see them or speak to them so I never know if they get our Christmas cards!

Yes the East Riding of Yorkshire does exist. As does East Yorkshire. Humberside does not exist although alot of places still us it.
