boring I know but I would like to retrain as a teacher....however I believe you have to have a degree and in my infinite wisdom at the age of 18 decided I didnt fancy going to uni

now I find myself wanting to become a teacher but it seems I have to have a degree.

in my present marital (or lack of) state, I cant afford to give up work to become a full time student

anyone know any different?

I think you can teach adults or privately without a degree. There are courses for teaching adults running at some colleges. Guess you'll just have to phone a few and see what they say.

no I want to teach in infant/junior school

not lazy - just dont see how I could afford to become a student and OU takes 7 yrs

the only thing you can teach without a degree is occupational courses like hairdressing in colleges. To be a school teacher you need a degree.

thought not
been on the government teaching website |& everything points to degrees
not sure what to do now...except tell my kids that they must get a degree regardless of how they feel at the time

not blaming my parents as I had applied & accepted a place...then just decided I didnt want to go & got a job...which is a well paid job but just feel I would rather give something back to the community in a job like teaching

oh well
I guess now single again I have plenty of time in the evenings to study

What about being a teaching assistant? You can train on the job.

7 years sounds like a lot but if you want a degree, the OU is an excellent way of getting one. they are very focused towards teachers. Not sure if it's the same for first degrees but with my second one I could double up courses and get it done quicker if I had wanted to.

What is the length (and name) of the course you need to do to become a teaching assistant? I'd thought of this (sorry to hijack your thread, MM), but can't work out exactly what you need to do...

Try here for information. Make sure you read the whole page though.

you don't actually need any training to become a teaching assistant. Most LEA's are short of htem and so recruit without any qualifications. Some do go on to follow courses but it's not a necessity
